The announcement that California is rapidly running out of water has put new pressure on our most precious resource that could, in turn, force increased prices and shut down organic food production. Ultimately, it could even threaten the food supply.
The recent warnings from NASA hydrologist Jay Famiglietti, based on satellite data of the groundwater supply as it is threatened by the ongoing drought, is only compounding the issues for farmers who have already been driven to cut back production as water is rerouted to cities and industries. State leaders are embracing a full on crisis, and there is no sign of letting up:
At a news conference on March 19, 2015, California Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon warned, There is no greater crisis facing our state today than our lack of water.
In fact, there is no contingency plan if California runs out of water. Unless the situation changes, an all out war for water is coming. The first front is economic.
Thousands of farming jobs have already been lost, and many more are likely coming in the state that produces more farm-to-table produce, and in particular more organic fruits and vegetables, than any other in the United States. Many farmers have been forced to stop planting their fields, while others have found it more profitable to sell their water rights to cities than to grow their crops at all.

"This week's moves come after the state has fallen behind targets to increase water efficiency in 2015 amid the state's worst drought in 1,200 years."
Isn’t there a large body of water off their western coast? Good grief. Instead of a stupid train to nowhere, they could have invested billions in desalination plants on the coast. Get a clue, CA.
Maybe California should not have imported and protected millions of illegals. How many resources, water included, are consumed by these multitudes? All of the conservation and green initiatives are likely completely negated and more by the huge population growth.
Jerry Brown was governor then too wasn't he?
Water is for fighting over.
Whiskey is for drinking.
The EPA would probably put the kibosh on that plan - that would be depleting the ocean, don'tcha know.
There is no greater crisis facing this state than the same old leaders and groups turning their heads as we have yet another drought.
Moonbeam could have championed doing more instead of primping for higher office. Dams, reservoirs,.. But NNOOOooOOOoo..
Open Borders and No Vision.. The Dems and idiots that are the powers that be have been messing California up more than Obama in an ice cream parlor smoking a doob. They been doing it and US for years.
What the heck is Moonbeam smoking now? Still runnning.?
Unlike dammed waters.. We live in damned times.
Your comment should be screamed from every building, apartment and hilltop.
Maybe they should cancel the bullet train to nowhere boondoggle?
I agree...I live in California and I am sure people are tired of hearing me say the same thing.
Youre a dreamer.
California’s wealth is in food production.
Shut down food production (and the income generated by it) and the State will run out of money.
For all those that glory in California’s misfortune to be controlled by public unions remember the price you pay for imported food will increase as the production in California decreases.
I think it could get quite bad as I read that past Californian climate the 20th cent was an anomaly as the natural state of California is drought.
No worries— Nanners Peelousey will get plenty of water for her vineyards and betchya Di-hiFi will never have to ration one drop of H2O for her mansion on Pacific high. Thy royal hideous hineyasses.
Kalifornians need water?
How about you build a train with that money?
Maybe Jerry Brown can make Camels carbon free, after all they don’t use fossil fuels.
California is not “running out” of water. After years of managing it very well, there has been a collapse of will to continue to maintain the system that has served so very well since early in the 20th Century, when the irrigation dams and the distribution network were devised.
The systems are being dismantled and the water diverted elsewhere for some esoteric “environmental” purposes.
A “man-made” disaster.
Agreed. They could have even built a bunch of solar desalinization plants for some of the money they’ve wasted on trains, rail and such.
