3 Reasons Ted Cruz Could Win
The Federalist ^ | 03/24/2015 | Ben Domenech

Welcome to Thunderdome, Ted Cruz! And wow, that’s a video straight out of the consultant minds of Veep. Maybe throw in a puppy? Seriously, though, if announcing via Twitter is the new thing, I’m all for it. It could’ve saved us sending a reporter to Lynchburg this morning. Maybe somebody will announce via Meerkat and we can all stay at our desks and not drive somewhere to see candidates give the same speech they gave at CPAC but with a couple more paragraphs? It’d save us all a lot of time and it’d be environmentally friendly, too. Lower your carbon footprint: announce by Tweet.

The Acela corridor mindset about Ted Cruz is basically: “he has no path”, “why is he doing this”, or “he’s a disruptive pain in the butt and should shut up and go away”. Allow me to quote one of the emails I received last night on this topic: “he’s a disruptive pain in the butt and should shut up and go away”. Yes, I understand that Cruz’s approach to politics and speechmaking rubs some people the wrong way, but there is actually a counterintuitive case to be made that he has a clearer path to the nomination than his critics might like.

First: Ted Cruz matches up with the activist base better than any other significant candidate in a long time. I don’t think people outside of that base really understand how powerful Cruz’s appeal is to the populist energized conservative voter, which is of course just a faction of the right, but is a sizable faction. Cruz’s critics need to hope that he is limited to this faction, and incapable of appealing outside of it. But that may not prove to be the case,

Do you remember the endless commercials Dewhurst ran against Ted?

They were so bad that I even heard RINOs complaining.

I’ve never liked the idea of open primaries. The Dems and the so-called independent voters are gonna cause mischief on our side and they’re the reason people like Jeb Bush and Rand Paul have a shot at the nomination. If all GOP primaries and caucuses were restricted to Republicans only they would be blown out of the water. The Democrats are far more politically astute than the hapless GOP. They know who the strongest Republicans are and they will crossover to vote for our weakest candidate. The Democrats always tell us which candidate they fear by the amount of vitriol and venom they throw at them, and when they say things over and over such as that a particular person has no shot at winning. How often have we heard the media say Ted Cruz has no shot at winning in the last two days? How much crap have the Democrats thrown at Scott Walker since 2010? Those two will fight it out for the nomination and let’s hope we can get one of them across the finish line ahead of Jeb.

I not only remember the horrible commercials that the GOP-E loved, but I used them against Dewhurst on the ground.

Cruz is the first politician that I've EVER donated cash to when he announced.

I've helped Cruz in the past, but mostly with going door-to-door, and on the phone.

GO CRUZ!!!!

Take a good long look at where "Establishment Republicans" ALWAYS take us.

And on another note:

Cotton is great, but he has only been in the Senate for 3 months. I’d like to see him replace McConnell.

Conservative principles win, every time they are offered.

Not since Reagan has anything remotely resembling conservative principles been offered. The intervening GOP candidates have always tried to “split the difference” between what the Democrats have finagled and some lesser but similar objective.

And Ted Cruz is an ace of a salesman for conservative thought. We have an early steer on broadcasting just what those principles are, and by the grace of God and favorable winds, the word can get out to more people than ever, most especially those who have not been moved to cast a vote in several elections now.

It is both refreshing and exciting to see a candidate who stands firm and does not resemble a schmoo. Go Ted!

Walker would be a decent choice.

It’s the sort of thing that endears him to the right, but may make him a lot of enemies in the process – but when has Ted Cruz cared about that? He’s Sonny Corleone, and he’s here for a fight.

?

Leave the gun, take the cannoli.

“Cruz subtracts from Jeb Bush...not for Scott Walker.”

How do you see conservative firebrand Cruz subtracting from Liberal Establishment Bush?

And what do you mean, “not for Walker”—not from Walker? If so, why not?

If all GOP primaries and caucuses were restricted to Republicans only they would be blown out of the water.

I am no longer sure that is true. The GOPe has so alienated the base that many have turned independent out of spite. I myself am considering punching out of the burning plane but I am giving them this one last chance.

Almost every FR thread has someone renouncing their GOPe membership.

The political makeup of independents has been shifting.

Who do you think will be his running mate? I’d like to see Tom Cotton.

So you think he's a "Cotton pickin'" candidate?

Walker needs to punt. He is a nice guy but it is time to clear the decks.

I think Cruz gets ALL of Romney’s votes, plus way more moderate Hispanic votes than Romney, plus the stay-on-the couch Conservatives that ostensibly didn’t vote last election.

The question for me is can he win over many women voters against a woman Dem candidate? I think if he can’t do it, no one can.

He’s Sonny Corleone, and he’s here for a fight.

I just hope he doesn't wind up at a tool booth like Sonny.

Sonny’s fatal flaw, that got him killed in the toll both, was, as Don Corleone put it, to “let someone outside the family know what you’re thinking.” Cruz is not Sonny.

McCain, Boehner, and McConnell are Sonny.
