The justices heard arguments in a dispute over how San Francisco police in 2008 dealt with a woman with schizophrenia who had threatened to kill her social worker. Police ultimately forced their way into Teresa Sheehan's room at a group home, then shot her after she came at them with a knife.
Sheehan survived and later sued the city, claiming police had a duty under the Americans with Disabilities Act to consider her mental illness and take more steps to avoid a violent confrontation.
The case comes as police have been criticized for a series of high-profile incidents where suspects with mental illness have been shot and killed most recently an unarmed, naked man in an apartment complex outside Atlanta

what is the issue. Woman attacks police with deadly weapon— shoot her !!
Oh but she was crazy so — they should have dome something different or something.
Maybe it was because a) they knew she was crazy, and b) they busted her door down? If you want to encourage a schizo to come after you with a weapon, that’d be the way to do it.
Provocation.
The “money shot” in a defense shooting. If you shoot make sure there will be only one person giving a statement. I am surprised they didn't mag dump on her.
“...claiming police had a duty under the Americans with Disabilities Act to consider her mental illness and take more steps to avoid a violent confrontation.....”
In the old days, a real policeman would have done a “baton tap dance on her head” which would have been less violent but achieved the desired results.
Maybe she had a duty to herself to not keep a knife in her room if she knew she was mentally ill.
If a mentally ill person was going to shoot up a school full of children would a cop have to base his response on the ADA?
If this incident took place in any other jurisdiction than the Ninth Circuit would this case have to go to the Supreme Court?
Those “row house” apartments are densely packed with people in many neighborhoods. They may have been concerned about hitting somebody through a wall or two.
Let’s see. Woman in a ‘patient run Insane asylum’ and cops with guns. This story is going to need some comic relief.
Now now.
Don’t go insinuating that public servants should be smarter than fire hydrants.
Clearly all that is needed under any circumstances is testosterone.
If this incident took place in any other jurisdiction than the Ninth Circuit would this case have to go to the Supreme Court?

None of the the circumstances listed above in the previous comments happened, but, something did happen. Cops busted into a home for crazy people without a warrant and shot someone they knew was disabled. Had they calmly walked in and asked one of the workers to bring her to them there would likely have been no incident. Had they bean bagged her there would have likely been nothing more heard of it. If they had tazed her we would have likely never heard of it.
I am sick and tired of cops shooting people when they have alternatives. We have cops, we have judges, we have juries and we have executioners, why do cops so often have to be all four.
Psycho should be medicated and/or locked up.
Egg on my face. She was already was locked up. :/
