Excellent article, but it might be worth rethinking some of the points you've made, based on one key point:
Poverty isn't a problem in this country anymore ... it's an industry, and a huge portion of our GDP involves businesses and institutions that are built on some aspect of "fixing poverty."

You're right. A lot of that money to ‘help the poor’ goes to liberal elite organizations and large ineffectual government bureaucracies. In towns like mine nonprofits have to 'pass the poor around' so everyone keeps their numbers up to get funding. Of course the press doesn't look beyond the hype... because they're idiots...(useful)...
