Presbyterian Church (USA) Changes Its Constitution To Include Gay Marriage
By Sarah Pulliam Bailey March 17
The Presbyterian Church (USA), the largest body of Presbyterians in the country, approved a change in the wording of its constitution to allow gay and lesbian weddings within the church, a move that threatens to continue to split the mainline Protestant denomination.
The 171 regional presbyteries (local leadership bodies within the PCUSA) have been voting on whether to change the wording to call marriage a contract between a woman and a man to being between two people, traditionally a man and a woman. On Tuesday, the denomination reached its needed majority of yes votes from at least 86 presbyteries to take effect. The change will be included in the churchs Book of Order, part of its constitution, taking effect on June 21.
The church, which has more than 1.7 million members, voted last June to allow clergy to perform same-sex weddings. That vote gave clergy the choice of whether to preside over same-sex marriages in states where they are legal, an action which is now allowed in 36 state and the District of Columbia. Clergy will not be compelled to perform same-sex marriage.

I will certify that two of the strongest Christian leaders I have ever known were Catholic priests, both military chaplains. That said - I would disagree with you about who will be standing by Christ at the ‘end of days’. We are going to have to agree to disagree on that point. I am not going to throw cow chips at fellow believers, as we have a common enemy.
“Come out from among them”-St. Paul
There, fixed it.
American Baptist, if not now, soon will be if their female "pastors" have a say in it.
Why I left. Have no doubt, Satan is working overtime perverting most churches in defiance of the Word. Of course, we know how this all ends. Praise God!
Over the years I have seen so many non-Catholic churches fall from their Biblical Conservative principles. It started with the acceptance of artificial birth control in 1929, acceptance of divorce and remarriage, moved to women's ordination, Openly gay ministers/ bishops, and followed by gay marriage.
I would have bet my life savings that the Baptists would NEVER in a MILLION years permit gay marriage, but there are groups that at least call themselves Baptists that are down right anxious to perform these ceremonies.
Where does it end?
OK, I’m not going to publiclaly pee on your Cheerios. If you want specifics reply privately. I will burst your bubble, dude.
just an all inclusive comment
Ah yes, PCUSA: the denomination with 4.7 million members in 1965 and 1.7 million in 2013. I’m shrrrrrrrrinkin, I better adopt even MORE “progressive” policies to stem the tide!
I have heard and rebutted ALL of the anti-Catholic bigotry that is out there, which is why I came back to the Catholic Church.
Baptists are largely independent although they join Conventions.
You became a Catholic because people bashed Catholics? Not exactly a ringing endorsement.
And the RC has no business lecturing other churches on homosexuality. You have your own issues in the clergy.
And try to appeal to an increasingly secular, nonbelieving U.S. population that doesn’t bother with religion? That doesn’t really sound logical.
See my tag...
But, as a Christian who is not in the Catholic Church, I take that promise of Christ personally.
I’ve always believed it was “the church” as a whole; meaning all those who have received Christ as their Savior.
All Believers in Christ ARE the church.
Actually I found out all the bashing was a bunch of Horse Hockey.
And the RC has no business lecturing other churches on homosexuality. You have your own issues in the clergy.
Actually since we don't permit gays to marry we are the ones that can lecture, and you would all do well to listen.
Yeah but the clergy marrying them is gay.
Feel free to have the last word.
