The first direct flight from New Orleans to Cuba since 1958 departed from Louis Armstrong International Airport on Saturday (March 14) carrying nearly 80 Louisiana business and civic leaders, officials said.
The group is traveling to a week-long Cuba Hoy ("Cuba Today") Conference in Havana designed for business executives, lawyers and civic leaders for cultural education and networking events between U.S. and Cuban citizens.

The Port of New Orleans is the 6th largest in the U.S. measured by volume and New Orleans has about 3/4 of a million cruise passengers pass through each year.
The civic leaders had their bags stuffed with voter registrations.
New Orleans - Havana used to be a Delta route. According to other sources, service was discontinued in 1961. In any event, in 1958, Havana was still booming, and the date in this story doesn’t sound right.
