The Houston Chronicle ran a bizarre editorial on Monday that suggested that NASA lacks an advocate in Congress, even though two Texas lawmakers, Sen. Ted Cruz and Rep. John Culberson, chair important committees that oversee NASA and the space agencys funding. Essentially, the Chronicle accused the two members of Congress of neglecting the needs of the Johnson Spaceflight Center, which oversees much of human space flight for NASA. A close look at two recent hearings conducted by Cruzs Space, Science, and Competitiveness Subcommittee and Culbersons Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies suggests that the opposite is true.
The Cruz hearings, for example, studied at length the issue of space exploration, especially human missions to Mars. Cruz also touched on at length the continuing dependence on Russia for access to the International Space Station. Both issues are of keen interest to NASA employees and contractors at the Johnson Spaceflight Center.
The editorial made the following slam against Cruz. Meanwhile, Cruz seems to talk about NASA only as an excuse to criticize Earth science programs. With presidential campaign season starting up, don't expect Texas' junior senator to show any interest in the Johnson Space Center until it opens a branch in Iowa or New Hampshire. In point of fact, Cruz has also waxed eloquent about the need to return NASA to its core mission of space exploration, a policy change that would certainly be of benefit for JSC.

Almost sounds like some of the supporters of another candidate, don’t it?!
There is not a lot of human space flight for Johnson to monitor. We hitchhike with Russians, three or so at a time. How many people does it take to monitor that?
I wouldn’t listen to the Houston Comical. The clown who writes the editorials in the morning is the same guy who is calling and pestering you at dinnertime to buy a subscription to his lousy liberal rag...which we canceled two months ago, but they’re still delivering, for some reason.
The Houston Comical is always extremely liberal. I take it but I only read the deaths and letters to the editor.
Like I’ve been saying, if you want to see whom the left is really concerned about, take note of whom they are attacking. And, rest assured, the Chronicle is the left.
I miss the Houston Post. The Houston Chronicle is a joke and has been for a very long time.
Being slammed by the Houston Comical. Another badge of honor for Ted Cruz to proudly wear.
Liberals are only satisfied if every branch of government is a social experiment of one kind or another.
Ted Cruz is simply focusing the efforts of NASA to the function on which the organization was established.
Perhaps the Houston Chronicle can do away with the childish remarks about opening NASA offices in Iowa and New Hampshire. I could likewise state that the Houston Chronicle wants NASA offices in Dearborn Michigan and Haight-Ashbury San Francisco.
But now that a Conservative
is in charge, and the Republicans have won, it's not Fair!
Cry a river. You Lost, and Globull Warming has lost, you all have lost,
and America has lost it's way.
All these whiners better go cry at the feet of dah calipheet.
Muslims don’t think about ‘space’.
The chronicle doesn’t believe Senator Cruz and Congressman Culberson are doing enough to build islamic self-esteem.
Don’t they realize NASA has important “muslim outreach” to do...???
Senator Cruz should demand to see the result of their “muslim outreach” efforts.
For example, what did they do?, how much did they spend?, etc. etc... Demand a full report.
