European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has called for the creation of a European army to face up to Russia and other threats.
Mr Juncker said such an army would restore the European Union's foreign policy standing and show it is serious about defending its values.
It would not be in competition with Nato, he insisted.

Should work just about as well as the EU.
The last time they had a “European army” they invaded the
Soviet Union; they failed because we propped up Stalin...
A European Army would amount to Germany tightening its grip over the rest of Europe.
Circular Firing Squad.
That was the Germans.
The last ‘European’ army was Napoleon’s.
He forgot his snow parkas and galoshes.
And food. Ya gotta have food.
Yeah. He was the poster child for the maxim: “Never get involved in a land war in Asia.”
PS - Yes, I know that part of Russia is technically Europe, but for aintents and purposes it might as well have been Asia.
The Europeans cannot even control their Muslim invaders, I SERIOUSLY DOUBT they can field an army with any more capability than a Boy Scout troupe.
I wish I had a dollar for every post I read saying let Europe defend itself.
There were Finns, Romanians, Italians, Hungarians, and Bulgarians in their own armies, as well as countless western Europeans in SS divisions raised among their own countrymen (French, Norwegian, Dutch). Neutral Spain sent the Blue Division volunteers, while Ukrainians themselves joined the fight against Stalin...a very European army.
Failure to understand Europe’s fear of communism leads one to fail to understand Nazism. Were Nazis evil? Absolutely. Were communists worse? Most of Europe thought so...
Suddenly, oddly, not seeing that here.
Okay.
Let Europe not defend itself.
Small loss at this point.
and the Germans will end up in charge, just like the EU, the Brits will threaten to leave, the French will underperform to the point of where they just want to be involved (at first, then later in charge of— after the Germans take over the firepower) noncombatant operations.
The only way I see this going forward is a suitably agreeable means for all involved to do economic stimulus on a continent-wide scale...we can’t rely on America anymore, we have no fighting force of our own...we’ll have to build the weapons platforms and train the personnel...
Guns and butter.
We may also discover why it was more advantageous for American military bases and folks to be stationed around the world as a big deterrence - it may be a real deterrence to having some of the host countries from having more grand ideas...
europe needs an army like obama needs another butthole. he already has his, moochelles and any other tranny that walks into the white house. aint that enough??
Excellent overview by Stratfor, illustrating the range of Russia's military options in eastern Ukraine. The last and most practical option Stratfor presents is the one I predicted immediately after Russia annexed Crimea in response to the Maidan coup. The Dnieper River provides the most natural and defensible border between Ukrainian and Russian interests, providing Russia will a broad and defensible land bridge to Crimea and its strategic warm water port of Sevastopol.
I was surprised that Moscow didn't go ahead and invade eastern Ukraine and get it over with last year, choosing instead to provide limited support to the separatists in only two oblasts. But that opportunity might present itself again; as soon as the muddy steppes dry out from the spring rains, I expect Kiev will launch another offensive to encircle Donetsk and reestablish the border with Russia. Moscow will cite Ukraine's violation of Minsk II as justification to pounce on Ukraine's extended army and to consolidate everything east of the Dnieper River. That's my prediction, but I guess we'll see...
