Russia’s anti-U.S. sentiment now is even worse than it was in Soviet Union
Washington Post ^ | March 8 | Michael Birnbaum

Thought the Soviet Union was anti-American? Try today’s Russia.

After a year in which furious rhetoric has been pumped across Russian airwaves, anger toward the United States is at its worst since opinion polls began tracking it. From ordinary street vendors all the way up to the Kremlin, a wave of anti-U.S. bile has swept the country, surpassing any time since the Stalin era, observers say.

The indignation peaked after the assassination of Kremlin critic Boris Nemtsov, as conspiracy theories started to swirl — just a few hours after he was killed — that his death was a CIA plot to discredit Russia. (On Sunday, Russia charged two men from Chechnya, and detained three others, in connection with Nemtsov’s killing.)

There are drives to exchange Western-branded clothing for Russia’s red, blue and white. Efforts to replace Coke with Russian-made soft drinks. Fury over U.S. sanctions. And a passionate, conspiracy-laden fascination with the methods that Washington is supposedly using to foment unrest in Ukraine and Russia.

The anger is a challenge for U.S. policymakers seeking to reach out to a shrinking pool of friendly faces in Russia.

You forgot he sticks the IRS on Tea Party members and hates white cops...

Here’s a message to the Russians - we’re not too keen on the American government either...

It was 2001 when Bush said this “look in the eyes” bit. Putin was just installed by Yeltsin and was still weak. Oil prices were low and Russia didn’t have money. Putin tried really hard to not show his true self.

Bush makes it known he does not like Putin in his book “Decision Points”.

“I’m sick of all the action films having Russians as the homicidal bad guys. It’s getting old.”

Well, in the Orwellian New Century, you can’t have the Movie Homicidal Bad Guys looking like the Real-Life Homocidal Bad guys. That would be like, Racist, or homophobic, or sumpin’.

So, “The Bad Guys” are always White South Africans, or Russians/Ukrainians, or North Koreans. You CANNOT show any Chinese, Black, or African “Bad Guys”, that would again be racist.

The ONLY people that can be racists in the movies are Rich, White, Conservative Anglos.

But .. remember, Putin was treading lightly with Bush .. having heard the speeches Bush had given after 9/11. Those speeches with the, “we shall not tire, we shall not falter, we shall not fail” message could have caused Putin to be a little more cautious at first meeting.

I’m not surprised that Putin would choose to give Bush a softer approach in the beginning .. testing .. always testing.

I suppose this is just one more nation Obama was going to improve relations with. Remember when he state nations around the world would love us because we were going to treat them right now that Bush was gone?

What a joke.

They should make them drunk for realism's sake.

It will materialize with an invasion of one of the newer Eastern European NATO members, former Soviet nations.

Putin is betting Obama will not defend a NATO member with nuclear weapons, which is exactly what putin will use with the Russian superiority I tactical nuclear weapons, obama will back down, and NATO will dissolve, and then things start to get interesting.

Putin is playing chess while Obama is playing tick-tack-toe.
And we are screwed.

The Russkies plan on asking the question: "Will you go to war to defend Estonia? Latvia?" If the answer is "No," NATO is done. Considering the type of pathetic leadership in Europe, I don't see them coming to the rescue either.

"It’s possible, because when GW Bush was in office .. most of those years he had a Secretary of State who could speak FLUENT RUSSIAN .. plus 7-8 other languages.

When Condi Rice met with Putin, they were speaking the same language - and Putin had no doubts about what Bush would or would not do.

Commencement Address at Boston College (Secretary Condoleezza Rice, Boston, Massachusetts, May 22, 2006. US Department of State)

Excerpts:

As a student of a Catholic high school, the Sisters of Loretta taught me, I am pleased to be at an institution of higher education with such strong and celebrated Catholic and Jesuit traditions . . . You see, I got my Master's Degree at Notre Dame. (Boos.) I acquired a passion for the fighting Irish . . . and my family has been college educated and Presbyterian ever since. (Laughter and applause.) . . . I wandered into a course on international politics taught by a Czech refugee who specialized in Soviet studies, a man who had a daughter by the name of Madeleine Albright. With that one class, I was hooked. I discovered that my passion was Russia and all things Russian.

Well .. I didn’t say I was her most ardent fan.

I just know that she tamed Putin at a time when he needed to be kept out of the picture while Bush was dealing with 9/11 and a run-up to the war. Condi was NSA Director at the time.

And .. Putin knew if he made speeches in Russian, Condi would be able to translate. She was invaluable to Bush and that’s all that mattered to me.

Condi has always leaned left .. but that’s her choice.

There's the option of assimilating into our American culture. Those of us who identify ourselves as Americans are no longer concerned about negative characterizations of our distant European ancestors in fictional entertainment.

To clarify my comment, we see the people of the European nations that we are descended from as foreigners. Our opinion of any particular foreign nation depends on how the people of that nation treat each other and treat the people of the U.S.A.

Nations that live by internal corruption, dishonest propaganda and threats against the U.S.A. are not highly regarded.

An example... Most of us are descended in part from Huns. See the Hun conquest of the Roman Empire. Many Huns settled, while others returned to the steppes. Others, like the Huns, conquered, moved, settled and became some of our ancestors. But we don’t consider ourselves to be Huns, Persians or Babylonians.
