Almost two-thirds of Israelis would prefer a prime minister other than Binyamin Netanyahu, according to a surprise new poll that suggests the incumbent may be more vulnerable than previously thought.
The survey for the Jerusalem Post and its Hebrew sister paper, Maariv, was taken on Wednesday, a day after Netanyahu announced snap elections, and appears to undermine earlier polls that suggest his re-election will be straightforward. It also points to a complicated, febrile and unpredictable election campaign.
Asked whether they wanted Netanyahu to remain prime minister 60% of respondents said no, 34% said yes and 6% said they did not know. But the poll did indicate that the most popular party remains Netanyahus Likud suggesting a gulf between the popularity of him and that of his party.
Ben Caspit, commenting on his papers poll in Fridays Maariv, is not surprised.
The Netanyahu loyalists, his hardcore, still believe in him [...] The rest of the public, a large number of Israelis, does not want him.

Incredible. That's like Boston or Philadelphia having "Benedict Arnold Square" at the center of town.
The fact of the matter is that what it says ... is true. Netanyahu is not having a good time of it.
Bingo.
Bibi is a perfect example of someone that makes great speeches and produces nothing, not unlike our own Trey Gowdy.
Politics is never a good time, and neither is polling.
See you on Saint Patrick’s day, and one of us will have to admit defeat.
Netanyahu isn’t perfect but his competition is Obama in a skirt.
If they vote him out, I see a bad moon rising.
I have no idea which side will win and I haven’t claimed to know, so I don’t have a bet going in this race.
But I do know that it would be better for Israel if Netanyahu wins.
Stop looking at the Israel election as a direct leader election like our president
The Israeli’s have a goofy parlimentary system with I think is 6 partys espousing different sometimes fractional political positions. Not two like we have. On St Pat’s day (not observed there but mentioned because of the date March 17th) they’ll go to the polls and vote for the party candidate in a given district holding positions they favor.
The party which wins in that given district then sends that member to its parliment. Who then picks the PM which is the party leader from the party that usually has won the most seats in their parliment.
What Bibi’s group ought to do is resurect the LBJ “daisey chain” tv commercial pulled in the Goldwater campaign. And those other groups not getting Obama’s large$$$ use it as well.
Be careful of “surprise” polls.
They’re usually conducted in Palestine.
If Netanyahu falls, so does Israel and Obama will be further emboldened. He might as well ship warheads to Iran to finish the job and to use on us as well.
Precisely. Netanyahu struggling brings cheer to the Guardian.
If - heaven forfend - Netanyahu were to lose, his successor would be Obama’s guy. Obama’s campaign team has been in Israel the past few months. He will have HIS back, and together they will sell out Israel.
Like America? Elections, including voting the lesser of two evils, has consequences.
A constitutional transfer of power is not regime change.
Was Benedict Arnold a national leader who was assassinated?
70+ years ago...6 million Jews passively walked into the gas chambers...seems that today’s Jews are willing to risk the same fate...though with a nuke, it’s be all over in a second..
Speaking of titles for Netanyahu....I’ve seen “Leader of the Free World” more than once.
....Or in Arab majority towns.
Not just for Israel.
Why would “Arab majority towns” be “mad as hell” ..??
