Scott Walker supports ethanol mandate at Iowa summit
The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel ^ | March 7, 2015 | Jason Stein and Mary Spicuzza

Des Moines — Only weeks after taking this key state in the presidential race by surprise, Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker defended his front-runner status in Iowa by pledging to support a federal ethanol mandate, shifting his position on renewable fuels at a Republican roundup on farm issues.

The GOP governor and a lineup of other major potential presidential contenders — including former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush — took the stage before hundreds of spectators and media at the Iowa Ag Summit at the state fairgrounds here.

In the moderated discussion with ethanol entrepreneur Bruce Rastetter, Walker dropped his previous flat opposition to ethanol mandates, offering a new stance that's well-suited to a state covered in cornfields. Walker signaled he now favors keeping the mandate for now and phasing it out over time — without saying over what period of time.

"I do believe it's an access issue so it's something I'm willing to go forward on renewing a (federal) Renewable Fuel Standard...so farmers going forward planting crops know what the standard is," Walker said, adding that he wanted to "get to a point where you address some of those market access issues...so you no longer need some of the subsidies."

Walker, a past critic of ethanol, acknowledged in January that he would have to spell out his position on the issue as part of his likely presidential bid. In another key issue for Iowa, Walker said that he favored drawing down federal tax credits for wind power over time.

"This is one of those where I believe it's served its purpose," Walker said of the credits. "I would support phasing that out over a period of time."(continued)

Well...that only tells me Cruz is not running...

Besides Walker position is the correct one...phase them out over time...

A drop dead cut off will be devastating to Iowa...

Have you seen the full quote or you are believe the MjS?

As for me, if the quote reflects his position, I’ll not cast a vote for him under any circumstances. If not, never mind. ;-)

I used to have a non-powered push mower, but you have to continually sharpen the blades or it is ineffective.

Cruz received another round of applause when he returned to the honesty theme. “When I tell you that I will fight with every breath in my body to stop the government regulation that is strangling farms and ranches; that is strangling small businesses; that is killing job growth; when I tell you I’ll fight the EPA from expanding [the definition of] waters of the United States; when I tell you that I’ll fight to stop Obamacare or executive amnesty, then you know you can count on that, that I’m going to do what I said I would do, and I’m going to tell you the truth.”

Why phase it out. If something is wrong, it’s wrong. It’s like phasing out slavery or abortion.

He clearly said the subsidies would be phased out over time...
If that is what he actually said, I’m done with him. This ethanol thing is a special issue with me. Anyone that is not for ending it immediately will not get my vote.

You tell us.

I'll tell both of you. From earlier today:

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Texas Sen. Ted Cruz is telling Iowa Republicans and agribusiness leaders that he opposes the federal standard for renewable production, including ethanol.

At a forum focused on agricultural issues on Saturday, Cruz likens the federal renewable fuel standard to "corporate welfare."

Cruz tells the audience of roughly 1,000 that he has "every bit of faith that businesses can continue to compete, continue to do well without going on bended knee to the government."

Iowa is the nation's largest producer of ethanol.

Maybe “we the people” ought to forget our representatives and go directly to the lobbyists like Big Ag. I feel so helpless

I was hands down a Scott Walker guy, but no more.

Don't be stupid. Walker is by far the most strongest and superior presidential candidate Republicans have had since 1980. He's won three elections in four years, and he is brilliant at handling both the media and leftist attacks on him.

Oh, well, at a similar point in the cycle, Obama said he didn’t believe in gay marriage. We can hope Walker’s just lying. (sigh)

How are you going to end it immediately? Walker is not Obama. He's not going to issue an executive order banning it.

My buddy’s dad used to have one of those, very cool, but yeah the blades had to be razor sharp.

My push mower is just a cut in mower for my rider, so I could get away with a non powered mower for that duty.

At the beginning of last Summer, I bought a new Toro Easy Start push mower to get the areas my rider won’t reach, and ethanol gas with fuel stabilizer in it ruined the mower before it even cut one full size lot (over the course of a couple months.

I really hate ethanol gas.

I’ve been HUGE on Walker since before the rumors that he might run for pres. He’s been my personal front runner since then. If this is true, there is no way I will vote for him. This ethanol thing runs very deep for me. No politician that is not vehemently against it existing another day will get my vote. If that means I don’t vote, so be it. Maybe Claire Wolfe was right when she said in 101 things to do before the revolution: “Don’t vote. It only encourages them.”

If you think about it, the Renewable standard is like zerocare in that it’s a mandate for you to fuel your truck with something you don’t want, your engine doesn’t want. Fascist.

What are there, 5 purge gasoline stations per city in the US?
