Vegas mom blames bullying, school district for daughter’s suicide

Natika Bird says bullying killed her teenage daughter.

Carla Jamerson, who was 14, will never get her driver’s license, graduate from high school or fulfill her dream of becoming a scientist.

She committed suicide in the downstairs bathroom of the home she shared with her mother, father and 9-year-old sister on the night of Feb. 27.

Bird said her oldest daughter’s death could have and should have been prevented.

She said she cannot recall a time when Jamerson was not picked on by her classmates, from kindergarten to middle school.

It was especially terrible at Canarelli Middle School in southwest Las Vegas, the school Jamerson most recently attended, Bird said. At one point, students at the school created a Facebook page in Jamerson’s name to spread rumors of pregnancy and sexual promiscuity.

“They massacred her,” Bird said Thursday.

Don’t suppose she considered moving to a better place with a different, more respectable culture?

I'm female, so obviously a girl in jr high. (Well I guess you never know today!) A popular group of girls decided to get on my case in 7th grade for some stupid reason, we had been friends. I walked home and one day as soon as we were off school grounds and one of them said something I punched her right in the mouth. My friends I was walking with were even shocked. Not exactly proud of it but I did it. All I really remember as being the reason for their actions is that I had started taking school seriously and they were (mostly) a group of idiots in waiting. I'm friends with some of them today, even the girl I punched. She became a nurse and tells me I knocked some sense into her! All bullying, which I didn't even call it then, immediately stopped. No parents became involved.

She should blame the District. They were acting en loco parentis. (Look it up). As such they were legally, ethically, and morally responsible for the safety and well being of the child in their care. Period.

My son was bullied in high school. Here’s how I handled it. I set up a meeting with the administration and his teachers. I told them what was going on and they admitted to being aware of it. Then they told me about their “zero tolerance” policy about fighting for any reason.

I thanked them for explaining their policy. Then I politely asked them to listen quietly while I explained my policy. I looked at my son and told him that if he was someone tried to lay a hand on him he was to hit them as hard as he could until they stopped. Then he was to immediately find an adult.

I turned back to the staff and told them that if my child was harmed while he was in their care or he was punished for defending himself when they failed to I would sue not only the District but them personally.

I told them I’d have them stripped of their indemnity and leave them bankrupt. I thanked them for their time and said the meeting was over.

I then sent registered letters not only to the principal but everyone who was in the room. At the bottom of the letter I cc’d a prominent local attorney. I didn’t really, just picked the name out of the local Bar Association.

I got a phone call from the principal the day he got my letter. He assured me there would be no need to get the legal system involved. The bullying ceased at school.

“”””She should blame the District. They were acting en loco parentis.””””

She killed herself at home. How could you possibly ascribe blame to the school.

Too bad you weren’t my dad. I had to put up with that snake pit until it wrecked my health. :-(

some parents don’t have much choice on where there kids are going to school. choice in schools comes from having finances and resources to draw on. you are the one that is pathetic for calling the mother of this kid pathetic. and yes I thought about what you said. I grew up being bullied in school it only stopped when I was in high school because the kids that were bullying me got scared of me. some years were worse then others as far as the bullying went the big difference in how bad the bullying was depended on the adults that monitored what was going on in the schools. the adults could never stop it but they could at least keep the damage done to a minimum. some school districts are belter then others at this monitoring. I think that the mother would do belter if she were to find out witch kid set up the Facebook account and then sue the parents for the slander there child committed.

I don’t know, but my attitude was about the same, there was no way I would ever let some lowlife scum win by default, EVER! Yes I did get picked on and harrassed, but at the same time, I guess I had the fight rather than the flight response in me. As far as the internet goes, IMHO, there’s got to be some way to let people know that hey, do you really want to give up on life and let some lowlife win? When I was growing up, they even told you at the schools that if someone wrote nasty stuff to you to turn it in as evidence. If someone did it on say, facebook, why not do likewise?

It’s sad that people don’t seem to have the shake it off ability that they used too.

I think a quiet time at the start of the day would be just fine. Pray, read a book, whatever, and even if you don’t believe in any religion, well, I doubt there’s any problem with reading your book or taking a look at your flashcards.
