Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) has reintroduced legislation to do away with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
Sensenbrenner, a senior Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, said the policies under ATF's jurisdiction could be easily incorporated into other agencies. Moreover, he argued, the ATF has become embroiled in too many controversies in recent years, like the botched "Fast and Furious" gun-tracking operation.
The ATF has drawn the ire of Republican lawmakers for its proposed ban on an armor-piercing bullet used in AR-15 rifles. Republicans say that hunters frequently use the bullets. The bureau says it initiated the regulation to help protect law enforcement officers from bullets that can pierce armored vests.
Sensenbrenner's bill would transfer the ATF's functions related to guns, explosives and violent crime to the FBI. Meanwhile, responsibilities regarding alcohol and tobacco laws would fall under the Drug Enforcement Administration's jurisdiction.
The ATF director would have 180 days, or about six months, to submit a plan to Congress on how to wind down the agency.
Dissolving the ATF hasn't always been a priority for just Republicans, who generally oppose gun restrictions. Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, previously introduced a bill in 1993 to turn over the ATF's duties to other parts of the Justice Department.
Yes, but why not eliminate every department, every government employee, and everything else that Obama can use as a weapon against us, when we have the opportunity? We can always restore them, later, when we have a president who doesn’t hate America and us.
Now, now, we can’t have that.
Next thing you’ll know, We will start expecting them to adhere to their Oaths, the Rule of Law or, heaven forbid!, the Constitution...
Dogs and cats living together...total Armageddon.
Forget the restoring part, 80% of them are unconstitutional from the get go.
Abrogated?? Sorry, but no. There has NEVER been any legality to what Congress, let alone D.C., does 99% of the time.
Congress has consistently, blatantly and INTENTIONALLY subverted the Constitution for (easily) the past 100 years, with the help of the other branches.
We the People have NEVER given permission for Congress to delegate their authority to any unelected agency, department or bureaucracy. Neither have we the Executive branch to create, from whole cloth, the same.
Yet most people, even here, still believe we have some Rights, when we no longer have a Republic.
And take their Form 4473s with them.
One of the last Clinton impeachment managers still in Congress.
You are correct.
“The IRS, the EPA, NASAs GISS, NOAA, and a bunch more should be having nightmares of being fired permanently.”
Sounds good to me.
“Don’t. Fund. It.
It will dry up and blow away......”
We’ve tried to get that done a few times, the problem in stopping the funding appears to be with boehner, mcconnell and their minions. In the word of one senatorial rino, thad cochran “the Senate’s job is to fund government”. Our problem is we don’t have a political party to support us and of the 435 Congressmen and 100 Senators we only have 55 Congressmen and 18-20 Senators that are on our side.
The BATFE contributes to the well being of society in what fashion ? The same can be said of the EPA, OSHA, HUD, the Department of Education, the DLM, PBS, the National Insurity of Turtle Pathways to Heaven, the Accountibility Office of Left Handed Predestination and I could go on and on. Millions and millions of people whose only function is to ... well I can’t come up with a function for these useless dregs. I’m sure that the forum moderator will not only not allow this to be posted but my posting privileges will be revoked.
...then, after the BATF has been abolished, follow up and abolish the FCC too.
That will do for a warm up. I would also not fund the NEA (both of them), the IRS, Department of Energy, the EPA, and OSHA.
Why stop at the ATF?
