I’m not a fan of Assad, but he is a lesser problem in the region.

If there were any smart diplomacy in DC we would be using Assad's struggle as leverage to get some concessions out of him. Help him fight against ISIS in return for him driving Hezbolla out of his country.

Why would Assad drive Hezbollah out of his country, he wanted them there in the first place. They are some of his best fighting men. Assad is fighting for his life along with his Alawite (branch of Shiite faction) people. The Alawite’s are a minority in Syria, they will fight to the death. They have no other choice. That is why he used chemical weapons. It was a sign to his people that he was all in. He was not going to cut and run, because his only other option was the Hague. He will cut no deals, his only play now is victory, death, or life imprisonment. He will pick door number one. He knows that any negotiated settlement will be reneged on and he will end up in a prison cell in the end.
