A lawsuit filed against the maker of a popular dog food has triggered concerns among California pet owners.
Frank Lucido of Discovery Bay, a community in Northern California’s Eastern Contra Costa County, said his 8-year-old bulldog, Dozier, died three weeks after Lucido switched his pet’s diet to Purina’s Beneful dog food.
On Feb. 5, Lucido sued Nestle Purina PetCare Company in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California, alleging the dog food contains propylene glycol, which the suit said is an animal toxin used in automobile antifreeze; and mycotoxins, a group of toxins produced by fungus that occurs in grains.
Lucido also said his 11-year-old Labrador, Remo, and 4-year-old German Shepherd, Nella, are still recovering from kidney failure, lethargy and diarrhea.
"We have a dog that is still on a touch-and-go situation right now, and a decision might have to be made and I’m kind of dreading that right now," Lucido added.
The suit seeks unspecified damages, and a guarantee that Purina’s products are “safe for dogs.”

Funny you should ask that just now. I just finished (as in less than 20 minutes ago) whipping up a batch of food for our two dogs. Raw meat, raw eggs including shells, apples, blueberries, sweet potatoes (cooked), rice, and some vitamin/mineral/probiotic supplements mixed in. They love it.
Our dachshund on the other hand doesn't eat scraps. But when we eat, he sits and stares as only dachshunds do and waits his turn. When we are finished he gets the healthy part of our dinner—chicken for example. But not steak. Love that dog, but not sharing my steak with him.
He eats Beyond brand, chicken flavor only. He thinks dog food is that “crap she gives me when she doesn't feel like cooking.” :). I am careful what kind of food I give him. Since he usually sleeps between my husband and me we don't want any doggie gas attacks (or worse) in the middle of the night.
When I was growing up scraps were what dogs ate. After dinner all the scraps (minus the dangerous stuff like chicken bones of course) and leftovers went to one plate and then from that plate to the dog's bowl. It was what everyone did back then.
My 3lb gets home made food, raw chicken and turkey with organ meat eggs and shells and raw veggies and fruits ground in. I add dynovite powder and vitamin supplements. His treats are also home made from pumpkin and squash and lean chicken with peanut butter and oatmeal then baked into biscuits. Also beef or poultry jerky strips. All his food is unseasoned.
Another raw feeder here. Currently I am thinking of supplementing with a high quality food because meat costs have gone up so much.

The scraps of yesteryear were NOT like the scraps of today. Even the water quality is different. (GMOs, pesticides, fluoride, chlorine, antibiotics, etc.)
I used to feed Diamond Naturals (and Taste of the Wild— also made by them) but became concerned by some recall and qc issues. My lab got sick midway through a bag of TotW (had been eating it regularly for over a year) and wouldn’t eat the rest of the bag. I tried the two Costco (natures domain and Kirkland) but her coat didn’t look or feel as nice. I’ve been feeding NutriSource ever since with good results. Good MN company, isn’t ridiculously expensive, and both my dog and dogfoodadvisor.com like it.
Sigh. Antifreeze is made from ethylene glycol, an extremely toxic chemical that will destroy an animal’s (including human) kidneys when very, very small amounts are consumed.
Propylene glycol is an approved food additive that isgenerally recognized as safe for human consumption(though like all food additives that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s parfticularly wholesome, just that it won’t kill you).
There’s a BIG difference between these two chemicals. Just like there’s a big difference between ethanol and methanol: the former makes you drunk and the latter will kill you.

I can't imagine the dog food maker using antifreeze in their food. I can imagine the owner's dog licking antifreeze from his leaky car on the driveway.
Wellness Chicken with a small handful of real chicken or turkey meat and garnished with carrots. He loves it and is a healthy happy boy.
I’ve been using Orijen 6 fish for several years due to some kind of allergy, never did pinpoint it, that was causing ear infections. The fish formula was recommended since often times it’s one of animal meats that the dog is allergic to. Been working well for us. But with three high energy dogs between 50 - 70 lbs, it’s quite a feed bill.
Purina Dog Chow always available, and something real, every day... normally fish, but maybe gopher or coon, etc... whatever critter happens to be at the other end of my critter gitter... He wants me to go trapping, because he loves marten. He said so just yesterday.
We have also used the Orijen 6 fish..... he likes the red better.
We simply have to stay clear of chicken , grain and grasses. We went through the blood test garbage... grrr $$$. Falco had the ear infections and hotspots. At present they are mostly controllable... we also bathe him once a week with a medicated shampoo.
I hate going through all of this stuff, but he’s much more comfortable and I consider it my responsibility to do the best for my good friend.
My boy always has a bowl of Blue Buffalo Wilderness ready to go but it only gets better from there (at least as far as he’s concerned)boneless skinless chic breast,ground round,pork tenderloin,steaks,flounder and at least 3-4 days a week I make omlettes for breakfast that have sautéed chopped onions,g,y,r,o peppers,bacon bits,havartie and shredded Colby and he’s waiting for his 1/3 front and center.I have no idea how many things I’m doing wrong with his diet but what I do know is you could not imagine a healthier, happier,more playful and loving 10 1/2 year old Jack Russell than my boy Bandit. As far as the vet, update shots to this point.........keeping my fingers crossed.

No yet... the stuff we are doing at the moment is working, but I’ll look at it.
No canines around here. But 2 cherished kittehs get Wellness, Natural Balance, Blue and occasionally Orijens dry food, supplemented with a bit of canned Natural Balance. I put probiotic powder on their dry food to aid digestion.
I’m pretty sure I know what DE is. I keep the food-grade DE myself for food storage. But the ‘silver biotics gel or liquid’ - got any info or site you can steer my way?
Taste of the Wild dry kibble. Pacific Stream for mine, as it and another - I think it’s Prairie - has the lower amt of kcals.
But I mix it half-n-half with Purina Dog Chow, a proportion that keeps my higher strung dog from puking, but allows for money savings over feeding TotW pure. Not wealthy, me.
