A lawsuit filed against the maker of a popular dog food has triggered concerns among California pet owners.
Frank Lucido of Discovery Bay, a community in Northern Californias Eastern Contra Costa County, said his 8-year-old bulldog, Dozier, died three weeks after Lucido switched his pets diet to Purinas Beneful dog food.
On Feb. 5, Lucido sued Nestle Purina PetCare Company in U.S. District Court in the Northern District of California, alleging the dog food contains propylene glycol, which the suit said is an animal toxin used in automobile antifreeze; and mycotoxins, a group of toxins produced by fungus that occurs in grains.
Lucido also said his 11-year-old Labrador, Remo, and 4-year-old German Shepherd, Nella, are still recovering from kidney failure, lethargy and diarrhea.
"We have a dog that is still on a touch-and-go situation right now, and a decision might have to be made and Im kind of dreading that right now," Lucido added.
The suit seeks unspecified damages, and a guarantee that Purinas products are safe for dogs.

Thanks for asking. My German shepherds eat daily:
2/3 pounds of combination raw meat and sardines and 2 cups of grain free dry food. Blue Buffalo senior for the 15 year old, Kirkland salmon (made by Blue Diamond) for the eight year old.
Purina Beneful is awful dog food. Absolutely not recommended for larger dogs.
I’ve supplemented Doggie Dog’s dry and wet food with “The Missing Link “Ultimate Canine Hip and Joint Balanced Omega 3 & 6 Plus Glucosamine” for adult dogs, Dynovite, Spirugreen tablets, and Coconut Chips. I also add some real meat to his food as well. I’m trying out various dry and wet foods that do not have any grain added. He stray beagle that I have had for 6 years that is looking more and more bird dog. His spots have really been coming out since I have been more conscientious about his eating habits. He is slimming down, too. I also give him DE and squirt silver biotics gel or liquid on his food sometimes. He was almost mauled to death and my brother didn’t think he was going to make it. We prayed hard. . .he came home from the vets with tubes coming out of his body all over the place and stitches and a pile of medicine. Decided to ditch the vets pills and medicine and put silver biotics down the tubes, used the gel all over him and gave him the liquid to drink and he has absolutely no scars. . .his bark is a little different but other than that you wouldn’t have guessed he almost didn’t make it.
“Merrick” duck and sweet potato - NO GRAINS

“Does anyone feed their dogs scraps anymore? :)”
You can give dogs certain scraps but with caution.
Veggies like broccoli and carrots are okay as long as they have no seasoning or butter on it. I’d keep away from meat as getting seasoning off of them is harder.
Same thing happened with mine. She spent a week in the hospital and came out on a very low fat diet.
RAW food.
Supplemented with canned pumpkin.
Puppies get Fromes kibble and whole milk yogurt.
Adults will also get the B.A.R.F. diet. This is flash frozen raw food packaged in patties.
I feed my dog high quality food like Hill’s Scientific Diet or Merrick’s Whole Earth Farms.
Premium dog food can be competitively priced with grocery store brand dog food and the cost is usually $1.50 a day for two or three servings.
Purina is the cheapest food you can buy your dog.
Orijen Regional Red Grain-Free Dry Dog Food, 28.6-lb bag @ about $96 for a 28 pound bag. This bag lasts him for about 6 weeks. He also gets a big meaty bone once a day.
Our boy is a 5 year old GSD..full German bred. For the first couple of years we fed him a RAW diet...he loved it, but we learned he has an allergy, so we switched to this spendy stuff. He is exercised once a day during the week, and twice a day on the weekends. He weighs 86 pounds.
With Orijen and an $80 per month med, his allergy is no longer bothering him like it was.
For treats, we give him small bits of cooked beef liver. I only cook it because it would be even more gross to run around with a bag of raw liver in my pocket. ;>) That is the only treat he will eat. Folks, even the ups guy, have tried to feed him dog treats. For a long time he would simply ignore the offer, now he takes their treat and he places it on the ground. Yes, he is a spoiled brat.
Actually, propylene glycol is not toxic....It is used in food production..(reduces the freezing point of water) But ethylene glycol is indeed toxic..
The article also says they found certain other toxins related to decomposing grains.
It is possible that Purina bought some bad product or had a storage issue. I guess we will see...
I personally use the Kibbles/chunks and chews, made by Old Roy. My dog actually eats it by it’s shape, leaving the fish flavor for last...lol
Darwin’s raw...and Evangers Canned beef. Also homemade GOP and some veggies
Petcurean - Own.
I feed my GSD and GSD mix Tractor Store 4 Health Salmon and potatoes plus I add a little assortment of canned dog food. I just hate that we have to worry about this.
From Purina:
“WCPO contacted Nestlé Purina Petcare Company for response to this suit. Keith Schopp, spokesman for Purina, told WCPO the lawsuit’s claims are “without merit.”
“There are no quality issues with Beneful,” Schopp said. “Beneful is a high quality, nutritious food enjoyed by millions of dogs each day. Like other pet foods, Beneful is occasionally the subject of social media-driven misinformation.”
Beneful has been the target of two other class action lawsuits, both of which, Schopp said, were quickly dismissed.”
When I first got my Beagle Buddy who I rescued off the stree about 14 years ago (May he rest in peace) I bought a bag of Beneful and it gave him horrible diarrhea and upset. After one day I took him off it and went to Pet Smart and got Organic Ulta Nutra. Made in the USA and its great we still have our Chihuahua on it today. I would recommend it to anyone.
