One of the Indian men convicted of the notorious Delhi bus gang rape and murder of 2012 has prompted outrage by claiming that his victim was to blame.
In an interview from jail, Mukesh Singh said that women who went out at night had only themselves to blame if they attracted the attention of gangs of male molesters. A girl is far more responsible for rape than a boy, he said.
His victim, Jyoti Singh, 23, was returning from an evening at the cinema with a male friend when the six-strong gang offered them a lift in a bus they had stolen. She was raped and beaten with iron bars, prompting widespread demonstrations for Indian women to have greater protection from sexual violence.
In an interview for a BBC documentary, Singh also claimed that had Jyoti and her friend not tried to fight back, the gang would not have not have inflicted the savage beating from which she died two weeks later.

I have questioned the juvenile attitude towards “new” Freepers before.
I’ve asked what would be an acceptable time to be around here to have comments taken seriously and not be ridiculed?
I never get an answer.
.
When does the NOW delegation leave for Dehli?
So being a muslim in an Islamic run government has stopped rapes? Let me pick myself off the floor laughing!
That’s a good question. They don’t seem to like speaking up in cases like this.
A remark is stupid because it’s stupid, not because it’s from a newbie.
Old farts can and do post stupid things.
I have run afoul myself of the accusation that if you point out an accusation against Muslims is untrue, or even that Muslims aren’t involved, you’re “defending Muslims.”
Don’t these idiots realize that the best possible way to discredit legitimate criticisms of Islam and Islamists is to post idiotic claims that are easily proven wrong?
In the case in question, I’ve been unable to find much info on the religion of the parties, but I believe the young lady was Hindu and at least one of her rapists a Muslim.
If anybody has actual evidence as to the religious background of the perps, I’m interested. Not just articles by people assuming they’re Muslim because they did such a terrible thing.
We have a FReeper who believes “it’s the victim’s fault”, concerning Roman Polanski’s 13 year old rape victim.
Actually most Singhs aren’t Sikhs.
Most Sikhs are Singhs (at least it seems that way), but apparently there are way more Hindu Singhs than there are Sikhs.
I'm (then) 58 years old, I didn't just start forming my political thoughts upon joining F.R.
Thanks.
Learn something new every day.
In either case, they’re not mohammedans. Just foul rapists, who deserve to die.
Interesting that both the victim and the perpetrator are named “Singh”. Is the name really common in that area?
“Singh” is, yes, an incredibly common name in India, ranking right up there with “Chandra,” “Dass,” and “Patel.”
You vill be assimilated!
Then we have:
Which also means "lion" ...
*ALL* devout male Sikhs usually adopt the surname of Singh (Lion in Hindi). It is actually part of traditional Sikh religious belief, as much a part of the devout, practicing Sikh as the kirpan (dagger) on his person.
That there exist Sikhs who do not follow this tradition is a fact not unknown to me, but the majority of practicing Sikhs do follow this tradition, so much so that whenever I hear someone has the surname of Signh, I pretty much assume that the bearer of the name is a practicing Sikh (yeah, I know I *could* be wrong, but more often than not, it holds true...)

What a nice,mature attitude.
I probably tossed my laptop aside, pouted, and went and had some candy or ice cream. :-)

Yes, I have run into several non-Singh Sikhs.
And some not-Sikh Singhs.
Sikhs tend to emigrate at a much higher rate than other Indians (I think that 1/3 or more of all of them live elsewhere) so outside of India they seem to exist in larger numbers and have a greater presence than they do in India proper.
There aren’t really that many Sikhs, under 2% of the Indian population.
“Dont these idiots realize that the best possible way to discredit legitimate criticisms of Islam and Islamists is to post idiotic claims that are easily proven wrong?”
Exactly....It’s similar to the overuse of the word “racism”. It’s been so watered down it has become virtually meaningless.
