California, New York, and New Jersey always rank near the bottom of these lists as intrusive, red tape-bound hellholes.
The First in Freedom Index actually draws from a lot of the sources that have been cited here before, including the Fraser Institute's Economic Freedom of North America as well as Mercatus Center's Freedom in the 50 States, the Tax Foundation's State Business Tax Climate Index, and measures put together by the Center for Education Reform, among others.
To this, the North Carolina group adds its own weight and emphasis. The ultimate score is an average across the categories it examines. Florida, for example, is in first place overall, but at 5 in terms of fiscal policy, 1 in educational freedom, 45 in regulatory freedom, and 30 in healthcare freedom.

All have vices and virtues in various degrees. A ranking game like this is likely to be misleading.
Looks to be fairly accurate.
I am a bit surprised that Kentucky is rated that bad.
When you have a multifarious phenomenon and you try to boil it down to one score, you will see weirdness of this kind. The ethos in Lexington and Louisville is not the same as that in Appalachia, but weighs more heavily on the demographic scale.
We are a conservative state regardless of thlast two elections.
Problem is that the druggies, the illegals, the ignorant, the vote more than once and snowbirds, college kids voting in their own state and here vote in our national election and yet amendments, state etc all go republican and conservative. Our gun laws are good, but those 3 counties down in the south east should from their own state
I love my county of St Johns where St Augustine is and we have no Dems in the county being voted, we are one of the most republican counties in the state and yet many move here for the best public school district in the state, county is not in debt and is still growing as one of the fastest counties in the country.
And Illinois being “better” — get outta here. Maybe if Chicagostan were excluded.
sorry
form their own state , not from their own state.
I am sure the lack of a state income tax is a big draw for Florida, along with the relatively mild winters ...
the only to do something like this is expose a model that allows someone to input what things are important to them into the model - public schools, % christian, % conservative, taxes, temperatures, elevations, beaches, mountains, desert, etc
I’ll take Arizona anytime ... cept Tucsan (Marin county south)
Florida is a mixed bag, due mainly to the phony War On Drugs. Down here in the Fort Lauderdale area, rude cops are always performing illegal searches without probable cause and bullying citizens. Aside from that, we’re a pretty libertarian state, “shall issue” on concealed carry, and so on.
HUH.
We are a conservative state not a liberal-tarian state you mean.
We voted for normal marriage, liberal-tarians don’t have a problem with homo’s and their sham.
We voted no on drugs, liberal-tarians think drugs should be legal
If we got rid of the cess pit of the south east then we would be much more conservative.
Live in and like Collier County. Sadly we have Ft. Myers north of us to ruin the neighborhood but otherwise I see a lot to like in Lee County as well. Thankfully we have the Everglades to partially isolate us from Miami, but Alligator Alley gives crooks easy access to us.
Maybe you don't give a shit about the 4th Amendment, but some conservatives do...
HUH, tell me then, as a liberal-tarian then do they now advocate making drugs legal?
Like I said get rid of the cess pit of the south east and it’s idiots down there minus a few decent folk.
Not sure where you are but up here in the north east of FL many of us don’t want the south east as part of the state or it’s people.
I heard it was nice there in Collier county, yea shame about the south east part.
The federal government, state democrats and RINOs, and northern lefties who move to Florida and immediately try to reconstruct the cesspit they just escaped from have done a lot of damage to Florida in the last generation or two.
But it is still head and shoulders above the high tax Nanny States.
Be careful for the police state you ask for. You may get it.
When someone commits an actual crime of force, fraud, or negligence, then an actual crime has occurred, and not before. All else is Tyranny.
Authoritarians really make me laugh, whether on the left or the right, because the only thing they're arguing about is whose vision of Tyranny should prevail. That's why the independent middle is constantly whipsawed between two false extremes.
I categorically reject such nonsense. I'll take the animating contest of Freedom, with all of its perilous adjuncts, pros, cons, benefits, and opportunity.
I do not seek peace by caging my brethren who happen to party on this or that legal or illegal substance. It is to laugh.
Parenthetically, alcohol is by far the worst drug on the face of this earth. The death, violence and destruction it causes exceed by magnitudes the woes of all other drugs combined.
The hysterical Prohibitionist mind, whether left wing or right wing, with its self-righteous nanny-state impulses, is truly a thing to behold. Authoritarians, at their core, are of the same ilk. I'll take door number 3, Monty...
