(Reuters) - U.S. regulators are poised to impose the toughest rules yet on Internet service providers, aiming to ensure fair treatment of all web traffic through their networks.
The Federal Communications Commission is expected Thursday to approve Chairman Tom Wheeler's proposed "net neutrality" rules, regulating broadband providers more heavily than in the past and restricting their power to control download speeds on the web, for instance by potentially giving preference to companies that can afford to pay more.
The vote, expected along party lines with Democrats in favor, comes after a year of jostling between cable and telecom companies and net neutrality advocates, which included web startups. It culminated in the FCC receiving a record 4 million comments and a call from President Barack Obama to adopt the strongest rules possible...

The House has to vote on it?
In an honest House it would not pass.
I wonder how AlGore feels about all this? Wasn’t he the the one who invented the internet? /sarc
More affirmative action ignoramuses hired by Los Federales to regulate things to sheeeeeeet. Bureaucratic empire building at its finest. More tax money stolen from the peasants in the provinces to pay high salaried Federal trough feeders in the greater DC region which already is the wealthiest slice of America
I got that part of it wrong. The House was not voting, the five FCC commissars were voting on this massive power grab.
Thanks!
The problem is the broadband providers aren’t be regulated. There are only a few big ones and they work together. In fact, both dish networks are owned by Comcast and ATT.
Telecoms *have* been fighting this. The problem is that 1) they are already heavily regulated and have to temper comments about the FCC because they still have to be able to deal with these people as they do other things, and 2) too loud and you get the “pig squealing” argument.
This is on the people to not be gullible. How’s that been going?
Ray, thanks for your posts on this issue.
FWIW.
It seems that the FEDS think the free enterprise system has allowed “Some” to become “De-facto” monopolies.
This may be true, but so what. As long as that same system that allowed them to take risk and build the thing in the first place exists for others to challenge them.
IMHO, by adopting these “new rules” they are actually “Granting monopoly status” on those companies. By doing so, the FEDS will now have the ability to tell them what they can and can’t do, including the content they carry. You won’t find any language it the 330 page set of rules that directly say this, but this is only the first step.
Please let me know if my thinking on this is flawed.
we should file lawsuits to put a stop the these FCC laws/regulations as they are unlawful, unconstitutional , illegal and very harmful to individuals and the economy
This is some scary stuff. I havent seen the FCC documents but soros funded this and imo the days for this site , Drudge etc. are numbered as the FCC will now be able to hear grievances against web sites (Rush limbaugh just said this).
Im looking for another country to get out of this socialist hell hole Obama is turning the USA into
I’ve pretty much narrowed it down to the Dominican Republic and Panama.
Only 3 of the 5 voted for this.
The cable companies should get together and announce that all internet bills will double in 60 days. Or better yet that they will suspend internet service all together. By doing so they could beat this.
Aren’t the majority of cable companies (Comcast, Time Warner, etc) regime affiliates?
“Insurance” (investment) Co.s - “Banking” (investment) Co.s
Body Mortgages trafficking = ACA
“Oppressive governments (China, Cuba, Saudi Arabia etc. etc.) cant stand the free flow of ideas.”
You left out the United States.
The NYT Says it’s a win for the little guy....
So, it looks like if Drudge and Rush and others want to stay online, they may have to relocate abroad, or email or torrent newsletters or podcasts.
“U.S. regulators are poised to impose the toughest rules yet on Internet service providers, aiming to ensure fair treatment of all web traffic through their networks.”
Guess I can expect my internet to go up in price...and I’m already paying a hefty sum.
The Federal telephone excise tax was originally levied to pay for the Spanish-American Civil war. The administrating department is the IRS, not the FCC.
