If the German people were not already disarmed by the time Hitler got to power, he certainly would have. However it is worth noting that the German disarmament is a microcosm for gun control in general. When they were disarmed as citizens, the law abiding ones turned in their weapons. But Germany under the Weimar Republic wasn’t the model of stability we are accustomed to. The national Army was limited to 100,000 and was stripped of most everything and the police forces were weaker still. You had Freikorps running around as a private army keeping the communists from seizing control of provinces from the central government that was too weak and politically compromised to defend itself. In the midst of a disarmed populace they would have riots with everything up to and including WW1 machineguns and mortars. Death totals after these riots would often be in the four digits.
Gun control never works. It will always be a case of “Go ahead put down your gun and as soon as its secured don’t worry, I won’t use mine. We are from the government and we are here to help.”
