DHS declares ‘right-wing sovereign citizens’ top U.S. terror threat

A Department of Homeland Security report obtained by CNN last week indicates that DHS officials believe “right-wing sovereign citizen extremists” are as big a threat to the nation’s safety as Islamic extremists who sympathize with ISIS.

CNN reported Friday that “federal and local law enforcement groups view the domestic terror threat from sovereign citizen groups as equal to — and in some cases greater than — the threat from foreign Islamic terror groups, such as ISIS…”

From the report:

The government says these are extremists who believe that they can ignore laws and that their individual rights are under attack in routine daily instances such as a traffic stop or being required to obey a court order.

They’ve lashed out against authority in incidents such as one in 2012, in which a father and son were accused of engaging in a shootout with police in Louisiana, in a confrontation that began with an officer pulling them over for a traffic violation. Two officers were killed and several others wounded in the confrontation. The men were sovereign citizen extremists who claimed police had no authority over them.

According to the report, DHS officials outlined 24 incidents involving sovereign citizen extremists in the U.S. since 2010.

The DHS document classifies sovereign citizens as people who feel they have “unfettered authority to travel ‘on the land'” and who are likely to reject “the authority of the government, law enforcement, and the courts.”

DHS stopped short of declaring that all people who identify as sovereign citizens are dangerous but warned in the document that law enforcement personnel are most likely to come under attack from those who are violent.

Law enforcement officers “will remain the primary target of [sovereign citizen] violence over the next year due to their role in physically enforcing laws and regulations,” DHS asserts. The agency also contends that most violence involving sovereign citizens in 2015 will occur “during routine law enforcement encounters at a suspect’s home, during enforcement stops and at government offices.”

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), which routinely criticizes the media’s focus on Islamic terrorism, championed the DHS report.

“We welcome this new intelligence assessment on the threat posed by domestic right-wing violent extremists,” CAIR said in a statement.

“It is the government’s responsibility to address all forms of violent extremism — regardless of ideology — and in proportion to the criminal threat posed by those groups.”

“We now call on the DHS and FBI to release an intelligence assessment addressing the spike in hate crimes targeting Muslim, Arab, Middle Eastern, Sikh, Hindu, and South Asian communities throughout the United States,” CAIR continued.

The report comes on the heels of the White House summit on “violent extremism” last week.

Did CAIR merely “champion” the DHS report, or did they help write it?

They could eliminate a lot of that if they limited no knock, unannounced home invasions to situations that really warranted them. If guys bust into my home I’m going to get my weapon, it’s not a matter of knowingly shooting back at police.

I think the ‘confusion’ (IMO, intentional obfuscation) is in attaching that word ‘sovereign’ to citizen. They can relate it all back to those here who don’t recognize their authority at all, but what they REALLY mean, and are tracking, are citizens of thought and words expressed. Don’t be taken in by their subterfuge.

The fact that CAIR chimed in here like some world class butt boys singing DHS’ refrain like a choir tells me everything I need to know what this really is.

I mean that Islamic terrorists pose a threat to the general public while these “sovereign citizen” types do not.

The flag was a quarter inch shorter lengthwise than the official proportions and he claimed that it de-legitimized the township authority. If not that it would have been something else.

these are extremists who believe that they can ignore laws and that their individual rights are under attack

Our Founders saw fit to not only ignore tyrannical laws, but to actively flout them. There is governmental authority, then there is the higher authority that actually empowers government: We the People. Governments derive their powers from the CONSENT of the governed. There are many laws to which I do not grant my consent.

Our individual rights ARE under attack. Anyone who can wade through the draconian regulations promulgated by "our" government and not see that is willfully blind. When you can't even decide if you're going to wear a seat belt, how much water you can use to flush your toilet, or what kind of light bulb to use, you can be assured that your individual rights are being ignored. We won't even talk about being forced to go to the bathroom with fags or bake them cakes.

This government would do well to fear those who think their rights are under assault. Because they are.

One of the Hutaree members who was arrested a few years ago was telling me that the “Sovereigns” were going around scraping the little reflectors off the back of the road signs in the area. I hadn’t noticed but I checked and sure enough most of them are gone.

He says if the lack of road sign reflectors are all it takes to stop the UN from taking over, we have nothing to worry about. LOL

It sounds like a translation of Ministerium fur Staatsicherheit, aka Stasi.

I’m not a member of the “sovereign citizen” movement and don’t know much about it, but when was the last time a “sovereign citizen” committed an act of terror, murder, assault, rape, robbery, or even shoplifted from the corner liquor store? There is not a single instance of them shooting up a college, elementary school, or army base. Nor is there a single instance of them organizing a flash mob, rioting or playing the “knock-out game”. Yet, the gubmint believes them to be a major terrorist threat? This is nothing more than a bunch of upside-down horse sh!t.

The real terrorists in our midst that present a clear and present danger to the USA are the “black community”, the “Moose Limb community”, community organizers, green-weenies, liberal azzhats, Barry Obama, Eric Holder, Valerie Jarret, the MSM, the SPLC, the DNC, the DHS, public schools and every limp-d!ck left-wing loser that collects a gubmint check.

Well, that’s my take on it anyways. (Whew!, I feel better now. That was very therapeutic.)

Please remind me how many people have been killed by "right-wing sovereign citizens" compared to, let's say, Islamists?
It goes to confirm my suspicions that the gov't is not concerned with who's a threat to ordinary people, only with those who are criticizing the government.

Sounds like the Hutaree guy wasn’t real impressed with the “sovereigns”.

So what’s your impression of the Hutaree given that you’ve had contact with them (or one of them). Are they far out, inbred, backwoods militia types? Or is there something more thoughtful going on there? Are they dangerous?

I was a little concerned about the Hutaree at first but as I got to know the guy near me I found him to be an outgoing, intelligent, solid Christian. Obviously there is a lot of concern about overtaxation, regulation and government overreach but there is no violence there.

While they do paramilitary style training its not for fighting against government. Its more about being effective if called by state, local or federal government to serve or assist.

They beat the feds by being exactly the opposite of what the feds hoped they would be. The feds came in hard and expecting a shootout. Instead my neighbor saw them coming and when they kicked his door open, they found him face down with his arms out to his sides.

Very interesting. I remember when they were in the news but can’t remember what happened to the case against them. How did that turn out? And how the heck did they come up with the name Hutaree...did he ever give you the history on that?

They were all acquitted. The leader was elected constable in Addison Michigan after the feds declared that the town lived in fear of the Hutaree. He said he was going to use the position to help neighbors work out disputes without the courts.

Just search Keyword “Hutaree”

We must be vigilant against attacks by the clannish Amish and Mennonite factions that are scattered throughout the country.

Additionally I detect a high degree of militarism in the ranks of the Knights of Columbus.

Elks and Moose lodge members can be a serious problem.

(Meanwhile, back in the Islamic Cultural Center, a friendly imam lectures worshippers about the beauty of the Koran. How refreshing to have in our cities Mosques wherein you’ll find adherents to the religion of peace.)
