Morning Brief: Texas Colleges Say Campus Carry Would Cost Millions, Ted Cruz Could Have a Big Week

Campus Carry Could Cost Millions

The Houston Chronicle over the weekend reported that many Texas colleges would have to spend millions if campus carry passes during the legislative session. According to the Chronicle, Texas Tech would have to shell out $7 million if campus carry passes. The University of Texas and University of Houston combined would have to make $47 million in changes.

The UH System’s cost estimate notes the need to “create, maintain, and staff secured weapons storage facilities in nine dormitories,” as well as hire additional security personnel “to man the facilities 24 hours per day 7 days per week.” The total cost would be $3 million in the first year and $1.2 million annually after that. For the UT System, campuses would need to shell out money “for police to educate the campus community about this law and to remind concealed carry licenses owners how important it is to remain in compliance with gun laws at all times.”

The bill says current law barring guns from hospitals would be continued and that public institutions can establish their own rules for on-campus firearm storage. But worries have mounted this year the legislation will pass without a provision to allow campuses to totally opt out of these mandates.

Give me a break. Sounds like to me this is just another way for some colleges to complain and possibly increase student fees and tuition. They can blame the state for passing a common sense law and just claim it will cost the school millions of dollars.

Ted Cruz in for a Big Week

Senator Ted Cruz should be making headlines throughout the week according to McClatchyDC.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is likely to draw the national spotlight next week with a legislative trifecta: a funding fight over the Department of Homeland Security, a vote for a new attorney general and a review on the future of NASA.

At the same time, Cruz will be hoping to make a splash among the Republican hard core for his possible 2016 presidential run by speaking and mingling Thursday at CPAC, the meeting of the Conservative Political Action Conference.

Cruz, a neophyte politician elected in 2012, became a household name with his 21-hour floor speech leading up to 2013’s partial government shutdown. He seems poised to reprise his role as a shutdown cheerleader, supporting Republicans in the House of Representatives who have tied homeland security funding to rollbacks of President Barack Obama’s executive actions on immigration.

Each of the things mentioned in the article could have a positive impact for Cruz and his 2016 aspirations. This week alone, Cruz will be able to bash liberals and the administration, lay out a path forward for the country and lay out a path forward for the world when it comes to space exploration. Not bad.

Maybe I’m Stupid? I did not get trained in common-core mathematical principles. But just how in the hell does Stopping from infringing on the people’s god given rights COST the School Money? especially this much. Now I can understand paying the janitor a little overtime to remove all those Sig Heil and No Guns signs, but $47 Million Dollars worth?

Cries of mass shootings 24/7 didn’t work, so now the Plan B argument is money. Next will come the threat to national security, followed by how concealed carry spurs global warming, then how it makes women earn less than men, and...you get the picture. Hold fast.

Followed by how concealed carry spurs global warming.

But of course it does because of what President Bush did with racism.

(There! A leftist blame game triple play!)

“the need to “create, maintain, and staff secured weapons storage facilities in nine dormitories”

HUH? If your gonna lock ‘em up why even have ‘em?

I can hear it now, “hold on active shooter, while I get my gun out of the secured weapons storage facility, I’ll be right back”..........unbelievable.

Of what value is campus carry if the guns are locked up and not available to their owners?

The Houston “Comical” is a very left wing newspaper, so they have written this in a manner to indicate it will cost many taxpayer dollars if campus carry is allowed. ...Idiots!

The bill says current law barring guns from hospitals would be continued and that public institutions can establish their own rules for on-campus firearm storage.

What? firearms aren't currently banned from hospitals, unless they have the 30.06 sign posted. It's been that way since 1997. The only exception would be if the hospital is part of campus, but most don't have that. They have a clinic, but not an actual hospital.

While I was at SMU I asked about this, as that's when I stopped by a gun show and bought my first firearm (that I actually bought myself). Per the police department, we had to go straight to the police department, and turn them in for holding, and could only retrieve a firearm when headed straight off of campus. They stored them in the campus cops' arms room. I would think most schools already have some kind of weapons storage with their police departments. But even then, if campus carry is allowed, why would anyone be turning them in or needing storage?
