On Saturday, the New York Daily News reported that former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani doubled down on his criticism of Barack Obama, saying the president has been influenced by communism since childhood. According to the Daily News, Giuliani said Obama has been immersed in the statist ideology since he was about nine years old.
“The ideas that are troubling me and are leading to this come from Communists with whom he associated since he was 9 years old,” the former mayor told the Daily News. MSNBC host Al Sharpton responded by calling the statement racist, despite Obama's own admission that he sought out "Marxist professors" as friends while in college.
“He has built a lot of his career on playing with race codes,” Sharpton said. “That is what he did to David Dinkins. That is what he did to activists when he was mad.”
Giuliani also said Obama "was influenced by Frank Marshall Davis, who was a communist," and spent "17 years in the church of Jeremiah Wright … the guy who said 'God damn America, not God bless America."
