College professor Jeff Wilson lived in a dumpster for a year to prove people could be happy and healthy in a less than ideal situation while saving the environment. AMHQ's Jennifer Delgado has the details.

Anyway, a dumpster with solar power and air conditioning ain’t exactly the same as eking out an existence in the slums of New Delhi or Mogadishu. I’m reminded of a professor at local university years ago who took his class on a candle-lit walk around campus at night to give them a taste of what it was like to be homeless. As if walking around with a candle on the campus of a suburban university is anything like being a probably mentally ill, probably alcohol or drug-addicted, person who doesn’t have the luxury of heading back to the dorms after the candle burns out.
Also, I guaran-darn-tee you that that dumpster had a very special funk after the first few months. Possibly after the first few weeks.

Some idiot decides to convert a dumpster with lights and an a/c and declares it to be a “roughing it” experience. The house I lived in as a kid wasn’t that luxurious...trust me.

Please, most people think of a dumpster as the standard 4 cubic yard size not a thirty or forty cubic yard dumpster, and most homeless people live in a box or just blankets on the ground. This guy is JAFL(Just Another Fugging Liberal) pretending to be homeless while living in what a truly homeless person would consider luxury. I cry for his sacrifice.

The utility of a dumpster is that it exists to collect, contain and remove trash. This fellow’s dumpster seems to follow the functions of collection and containment, but not removal of trash. So I cannot think of it as a “dumpster” in the true sense of the word.
