I generally HATE pistols with slide-mounted safeties, but my experience has been that the Px4 series is a good choice for a people who will - as you said - take the time to understand how they work. Between the easy de-cocking, the long-ish DA trigger pull and the visible hammer, the Berettas are good candidates for people with "belt & suspenders" personalities.

The Beretta Tomcat .32 is a good choice for a woman. My daughter has mine now. The barrel flips up for loading. Punch of a .38 mebbe, as a ‘bad breath gun’ using Winchester silvertips.
Double action, then single action and a side safety. The Walther .380 slide and others can be hard to rack if you don’t have gorilla-like hand strength, like most of us.
Nothing unsafe about a Glock or any handgun if you use ‘Israeli carry’ and practice it.
That reminds me—I hope Netanyahu butters Bozo’s necktie in his speech before Congress. And who’s been feeding Boehner Viagra pills? Inviting the Israeli, telling the Democrats the DHS may go begging. Hmmm.
