Scott Walker: Obama Made Me More Of An Immigration Hardliner
talkingpointsmemo.com ^ | 2/20/15 | Daniel Strauss

Since Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) has been making serious moves toward running for president in 2016, he's modified his rhetoric on immigration reform. In the past, Walker focused his arguments on fixing the nation's broken immigration system and figuring out a way to properly incorporate the millions of immigrants living in the country illegally. Now, the Wisconsin governor's comments are far more focused on his opposition to "amnesty" and the importance of border security.

As Walker has begun gearing up toward running for president in 2016, he's been dogged by an interview he did in 2013 with The Wausau Daily Herald editorial board where he voiced support for a pathway to citizenship. Walker on Monday went on Fox News to say that he was misquoted by the Daily Herald and has always said "repeatedly I oppose amnesty."

"I think we're a nation of immigrants, but we're also a nation of laws. We should have a legal way for people to come into this country either for work or for citizenship, just like we have for generations," Walker told Fox News' Bret Baier. "Part of that deal is we need to make sure we have a border that's secure, not just for immigration reasons, but as I mentioned, for national security."

He didn't go into much more detail in the interview.

That comment sparked a blistering column from Daily Herald engagement editor Robert Mentzer who included the full immigration remarks of Walker's interview with the editorial board.

Well, let's see how it unfolds, in the mean time, as I said, it's simply wrong to make an equivalence between the bamster and Cruz. I'd suggest you just stop, it's not just unneccesary, it's wrong.

I really didn’t compare him to Obama directly just his time in the Senate which is actually true.

Agreed. TPM. Toilet Paper Manifesto.

It's disturbing how many here lapped it up with such an uncritical eye.

Well, you really did, just go review your own post. Now that you are taking it back, I'm just suggesting you don't repeat that kind of attack.

Too much circular firing squad here already.

No need to keep on, I'm done.

I'm much more upset that people here received this leftist (s)hit piece so uncritically.

That’s also how he won reelection to the Senate.

We should have a legal way for people to come into this country

If he doesn’t know that we already have a legal way for people to come into this country he isn’t as smart as some people think.

It may be that he has been reading the comments here and knows that his previous statements were not very popular except for the bandwagoners.

He has always been consistent in what he says, no backtracking, no sudden mind changing revelations, no cowardly flip flopping. If or when he makes a mistake; or changes a position, he will not point fingers but straight up take responsibility.

Cruz is for the legalization of those already here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/09/13/us/cruz-tries-to-claim-the-middle-ground-on-immigration.html?pagewanted=all

Snippet from the article:

What has not been as evident is what “he supports: legal status for millions of people here already, while making it easier for immigrants to come here through the front door”.

Actually I was just responding to this choice statement which is itself a fine example of projection:

“I am pretty sure that nothing will be good enough for the likes of you.”

OK, fair enough.

It wasn't your statement, but what would be good enough? And is there any potential candidate that is close to that?

From the various links being thrown back and forth, it appears that all the top choices of conservative Freepers share roughly the same position. Some on here have made statements that anyone who supports amnesty in any form is unacceptable. That pretty eliminates everyone.

Cruz has been my favorite. But it depends on whether or not he’s said that he has no intention of deporting our current crop of foreign citizens illegally squatting in the country. If he has said that, as some have been saying, then my choice would be Jeff Sessions. But he’s not running.

I had a front row seat to watch California transform from American suburbia in the late 1960s into the third world colony it has become today. It became obvious that the GOP establishment was on the side of illegal aliens when they fought against grassroots Californians on Prop 187 in 1994. They have only gotten worse since.

So that’s how I decided that Republicans who won’t deport foreign nationals won’t get my vote. And you may be right, it may eliminate everyone.

If you can tell me how it makes sense to help ethnically cleanse America of its population and replace it with a foreign one then maybe I’ll vote for a Jeb Bush or a Marco Rubio and hasten the process. Why go over the cliff slowly when you can end things in style?

While beer is still consumed in Milwaukee more than anywhere else.

The beer that Made Mel Famous Walk Us. Old joke, someone else can remember from that punch line, I am way to old to remember it.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate your honesty.

I don't know that I have a favorite. I live in Wisconsin, so I have seen Walker up close. I really do not know a lot about Cruz outside of the general chatter. Unfortunately, I see a lot of misrepresentation of what Walker is, and a lot of it is coming from Cruz supporters. That makes me cautious about Cruz. I learned long ago that when I wasn't sure about a candidate or a position (like a proposition in CA) to look at who the supporters and detractors are. The stuff I see from the Cruz supporters, and the false statements they are making about Walker makes me really worried about Cruz.

But at the moment I am looking closest at Walker and Cruz.

As for immigration, there are so many things we should be doing but aren't. Here's a few thoughts -
-Real penalties for companies that knowingly hire illegals. Including jail time. I think this would solve most of the problem.
-Likewise, real penalties for renting to illegals.
-Close the birth-citizenship loophole.
-No catch-and-release. Immediate deportation (after jail time - see next).
-For those that break the law, jail time is served in camps near the border, with reduced time for labor on the border wall. After time served, immediate deportation. Since being here undocumented is against the law, 100% serve time at the border before being deported.
-No government services. The only exception is life-or-death medical care, followed by immediate deportation.
-Change tax system to a sales tax only. Closes the under-the-table gap and solves much of the drug problem at the same time.
-All government services (and forms) in English only. 100%. Only exception is for tourism. None of this voting with spanish ballots.
-Make it so that living here illegally is so uncomfortable that self-deporting is a major factor.
-Need a solution for non-Mexican deportation. Thinking an escorted flight home, with the cost coming out of the foreign aid we seem to send to every country in the world.
Regrettably, we need to help other countries be livable, to reduce the desire to illegally immigrate. It would appear the drug issue in northern Mexico needs to be addressed.
Asylum to be very closely scrutinized. We need to define friendly and unfriendly cultures and treat requests accordingly.
-H-1B visas need to be reconsidered. In my experience it isn't used to fill a position that cannot be filled locally. It is used to fill a position cheaper that a local resource.
The only was someone can apply for citizenship is from their own country, with a waiting period long enough to prove they are actually residing in their country. Like minimum one year wait, with monthly check-ins.

Wow, and that is just a start. I think one of the biggest items is we need to make it more expensive for people and businesses to do business with illegals than it is with citizens. Which means we need to solve the “chamber of commerce” issue on the right side of the political spectrum. Not sure how to do that. Casting a wide enough tent to win elections, but not so wide that you compromise your principals is a tough one.

Anyways, nice chatting.

LOL, re-read my post. I look like a maniac. You should see my welfare reform ideas. No food stamps. There would be government supported (maybe gov ran, maybe private ran) stores where anybody can pick up staples for free. Nobody would have an excuse to be hungry. However, those staples would be things like bags of rice, or potatoes, or peanut butter, or cooking oil. You want a TV dinner? Get a job. You want a bag of doritos? Get a job. And anyone getting government services would have to work for them. Sweeping the streets, or babysitting for the folks that are sweeping the streets. Or weeding parks. Or working on the farms that are growing the potatoes and apples that are in the welfare stores. I'm sure we can find enough things for these people to do. The ones that need it as a true safety net wouldn't mind. And the lazy democrats would finally have to contribute to society.

Schlitz. I went to school in Milwaukee. I would take brewery tours at the Schlitz, Pabst and Miller brewery’s for the free beers at the end. Miller is the only one still making beer in Milwaukee of the three. There are some smaller Brewery’s that have moved in. But nothing near the volume of the past.

And it was cheaper to close a brewery and open it up somewhere else just to modernize it.

Dwight Eisenhower was the last President to get serious about the problem of illegal aliens deciding that they can invite themselves to live in the US at will. Ike did it by deportation.

He assigned one of his WWII Generals, General Swing, to run the program which you can find under the name Operation Wetback. Unlike the current crop of cowards in charge of the Republican Party, Ike wasn’t afraid to take the side of the American people against foreign nationals who think America belongs to them by right.

Deportation works. It’s the only thing that does work. It discourages foreign citizens from taking this country for their own. It removes them and their political power base.

Anything less gets co-opted by a bipartisan political establishment that is on the side of illegal alien foreign nationals, as we learned all to well from the 1986 amnesty.

The only way to get the politicians to serve America’s interests instead of the desires of scofflaw foreigner nationals is to force them to enforce the law. Deportation is the law. Dubya refused to enforce it and tried to pass amnesty, Obama is much worse, and Jeb Bush is advertising the fact that he is just the same.
