Scott Walker: Obama Made Me More Of An Immigration Hardliner
talkingpointsmemo.com ^ | 2/20/15 | Daniel Strauss

Since Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker (R) has been making serious moves toward running for president in 2016, he's modified his rhetoric on immigration reform. In the past, Walker focused his arguments on fixing the nation's broken immigration system and figuring out a way to properly incorporate the millions of immigrants living in the country illegally. Now, the Wisconsin governor's comments are far more focused on his opposition to "amnesty" and the importance of border security.

As Walker has begun gearing up toward running for president in 2016, he's been dogged by an interview he did in 2013 with The Wausau Daily Herald editorial board where he voiced support for a pathway to citizenship. Walker on Monday went on Fox News to say that he was misquoted by the Daily Herald and has always said "repeatedly I oppose amnesty."

"I think we're a nation of immigrants, but we're also a nation of laws. We should have a legal way for people to come into this country either for work or for citizenship, just like we have for generations," Walker told Fox News' Bret Baier. "Part of that deal is we need to make sure we have a border that's secure, not just for immigration reasons, but as I mentioned, for national security."

He didn't go into much more detail in the interview.

That comment sparked a blistering column from Daily Herald engagement editor Robert Mentzer who included the full immigration remarks of Walker's interview with the editorial board.

In other words, Walker is a johnny-come-lately on enforcement of immigration law and border security because he can't be seen as agreeing with Obama on an issue and needs to appeal to the grass roots during the Republican primaries. Once that's done, he'll go back to "figuring out a way to property incorporate the millions of immigrants living in the country illegally."

Does Walker lurk at FR? What he's saying now is exactly the way to get past his early missteps with the invasion of the US.

Cruz/Walker could be a real interesting matchup. Cruz's highly-academically trained intellectual skills with Walker's practical, no-frills education. Senator and Governor. Both well spoken and intelligent. Both excellent campaigners who can articulate their message. Geographical and ethnic balance.

hmmm.......

I am hoping Walker is sincere, but I can see some candidate (Rubio comes to mind) saying, after the primaries, “Racist sentiments in grassroots made an Immigration Reformer” as he heads towards the Left.

And Mitt Romney became a “severe conservative” when he was running for president.

Ut oh. I don’t think using 0bola as an excuse is going to help Walker’s claim that he’s become more of a “hardliner” on immigration.

According to this article, Walker believes, “First, Obama’s executive action should be repealed” and that “we need absolute security at our borders and then we can address fixing our legal immigration system and deal with those here illegally but amnesty is not the answer.”

Was 0bola’s amnesty EO ever signed? How does it get repealed, if it’s never been signed?

Sounds like he’s trying to walk backwards and forward, at the same time. That’s a difficult task.

Romney also campaigned as a hardliner on illegal immigration in 2012. Then it was back to pushing the old establishment line about “a path to citizenship” along with his friends Rubio and the Bushes.

He needs to keep trying, he has 2 years to figure it out.

Yeah, it’s convenient politically, but also somewhat reasonable. The problems as a result of illegal immigration probably aren’t as noticeable in Wisconsin as in, say, Texas or California. If you’re not that vested in the problem, it’s pretty easy to take a middle-of-the-road and not particularly well-thought-out approach to it when asked.

But Obama, through his arrogant obnoxiousness, has brought the issue to the forefront, and it’s becoming very clear what the consequences of this policy is. It’s perfectly understandable to think that people without strong positions in the past could look at the situation now and take a different stand. From a political perspective, that’s what Walker needs to convince the voters has happened. I have no way to know if it’s just politics or a true change in convictions, however.

I think stating your position on the defining issue of our time needs to be clearly articulated.

It was all a big misunderstanding .....I knew it had to be....

It's not amnesty anyway, they will have to pay a $200 fine before they get citizenship, that will teach them to not do it again...

Next, let bank robbers keep the $$$ so they dont have to rob again.

Same tack McCain has taken over multiple election cycles.

But in the end we always end up back in the same place: The rule of law, national sovereignty, national security, and national borders, further degraded.

When you’re vetting candidates, look for consistent conservatism over the long haul.

If you don’t find that, even if you’re hearing the right words, it is almost certainly nothing but more lip service.

Another politician who checks to see what way the wind is blowing before he expresses an opinion.

Disappointing.

If Walker proceeds to give about dozen speeches insisting on deportation and nothing else then I’ll start to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Until then this is nothing more than the usual ‘election conversion’ bull manure the GOPe open borders lobby has played for decades.
