Hours after an explosion ripped through a Torrance refinery, residents for miles around continue to grapple with ash, a gas odor and concerns over poor air quality while inspectors confirmed that a filtration device was the source of the blast.
A smoke advisory was issued for areas near the ExxonMobil refinery due to Wednesday morning's explosion and fire.

this will jack gas up another 15 cents, that will make it a total of 40 cents or so to push gas to $3+ in a little over two weeks and soon the summer blend increase will hit. All hail the gaia worshippers and unions.
Trade publication OPIS, citing an unidentified source, reported that an electrostatic precipitator (ESP), which reduces fluid catalytic cracker particulates, exploded as contract workers were doing maintenance on the nearby fluid catalytic cracking unit, or FCC.
Contractors working on the FCC to fix the expanders, the source said, adding that an injection of ammonia on top of the flue gas stream caused a pressure buildup, which resulted in the ESP unit explosion.
The unit could take up to a year to replace, the source said.
