(Reuters) - The government has cleared a $8 billion plan to build India's most advanced warships, defence sources said, just months after ordering new submarines to close the gap with the Chinese navy in the Indian Ocean.
Since taking over last year, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has signalled his resolve to build a strong military after years of neglect that military planners say has left India unable to fight a two-front war against China and Pakistan.
India's navy has been rattled in recent months after Chinese submarines docked in Sri Lanka, just off its southern coast, underlining the growing reach of the Chinese navy after years of staying closer to its shores.
Modi summoned a meeting of the cabinet committee on security on Monday to approve construction of seven frigates equipped with stealth features to avoid easy detection, a defence ministry source said.
The Times of India said the government had also approved six nuclear-powered submarines for a further $8 billion. The defence source said he had no knowledge of the nuclear submarine programme, which traditionally has been kept under wraps.
The frigates in a programme called Project-17A will be built at government shipyards in Mumbai and Kolkata, in a boost for Modi's Make in India campaign to build a domestic defence industrial base and reduce dependence on expensive imports that have made India the world's biggest arms market.

If China’s not a threat to India, why is it Pakistan’s largest arms supplier? Why does it have nuclear missiles and upgraded airbases in Tibet? And plans for naval facilities in Pakistan and Sri Lanka?
Get your facts straight.
Every single one.
You sound like a ChiCom.
No, I just do not see India as an ally or country to be respected. Besides, have you been there? Having been to over 50 countries, it ranks as the absolute worst I’ve been to by any measure.
Have I been there? I am ex US Navy, and USMMA grad. I have been everywhere, and done things I am proud of, and things...well not so proud of.
Your rhetoric is dated and for another era.
Build flying chariots instead.
You still sound like a ChiCom. You don’t fool anybody with your garbage POV.
I agree and thank you for setting that butt wipe straight. These free trade gloBULList Freepers sure do have a rectal cranial inversion.
Let them build their own companies to compete. Keep them out of the USA.
American companies can not survive without cheap computer programmers on H-1B visa’s. If they stop importing H-1B people, many software company business will shift abroad. If that happens, we lose the tax revenue, and ALL the jobs in the entire company. Even a software company has other employees other than programmers, such as accountants, payroll, human resources, management, buyers, janitors, etc. All those jobs disappear if the company can not operate profitably.
There are valid reasons why companies hire H-1B people.
Assembler, Fortran, Cobol, Numerical Control machine programming for 12 different machines, each requiring unique codes, Programmable controller programming,dBase, Autocad subroutines, Intergraph subroutines, Finite element modeling, and at least half a dozen different computer operating systems.
Programming is just a tool. The real skill is knowing what to program. Some of my expert programs for engineering design and computerized machining have hundreds of thousands lines of code. Mastering the design and manufacturing knowledge was 25 times more difficult than programming that knowledge in computer program codes.
So, cant discuss without throwing insults. Nice. /s
Mark my words, India will eventually flex its military to say No to the US.
I visited India last in 1986 and had a great time. But I stayed in 5***** hotels such as the Taj in Mumbai.
Yeah. It was nice of him to list languages from pre-Y2K. I do IT consulting for an prestigious firm and direct multiple, large, “cleared” projects. I have heard not-so-knowledgeable people try to make IT a commodity; like it was mindless manual labor. Thats an ignorant, cheap, and foolish approach.
Of course they will say “no” to the US. Israel does this as needed. UK, France, Japan, Australia do so as a matter of course. You want subservient behavior. Nobody is in line to offer that. Can you name one country that is offering itself on a platter for the US? The Saudi’s are busy undermining the US within every Muslim dominated country. Your country, China, is busy fomenting trouble in the South China Seas, Africa, and Latin America, while smiling at us. Either you are naive or stupid...more than likely both.
I am sure Benedict Arnold used the same reasoning.
Such simplistic idiocy! Just because someone recognizes that India is not an ally and should not be treated as such does not mean they support China. You likely oppose Boehner, does that mean you favor Pelosi? Heck, may you do....
What time is it Beijing Chang?
Many comapanies will close doors and many people will then be out of jobs without cheap computer programmers from other countries. If you are just a computer programmer, I seriously advise you to learn other skills. There are estimates of over 3 million computer programmers world wide looking for jobs.
The world’s oldest democracy (USA) and the world’s largest democracy (India) are natural partners in fostering more freedom in this world of ours.
