Man, 72, faces 10 years in prison for antique pistol: ‘Beware of New Jersey’

Gordon Van Gilder, a 72-year-old retired schoolteacher in New Jersey, faces a 10-year prison sentence for possessing an unloaded 18th-century flintlock pistol in his car.

Mr. Van Gilder, a collector of 18th-century memorabilia, said he had the gun unloaded and wrapped in a cloth in the glove compartment of his vehicle when he was pulled over in November by a Cumberland County sheriff’s deputy for a minor traffic violation, according to a video posted last week by NRA News.

After consenting to a search of his vehicle, Mr. Van Gilder said he alerted the deputy of the pistol in his glove box. The deputy let him go that night, but four police officers showed up at his home the next morning with an arrest warrant, he told NRA News.

“Beware of New Jersey. Don’t come here. Don’t live here,” Mr. Van Gilder said. “Here I am, a retired teacher coming out of his house in handcuffs, who had a flintlock pistol and now I’m charged as a felon. It’s unbelievable. It’s outrageous. It’s an insult to decent people.”

New Jersey police searching a citizen for weapons. Nothing new.

Upper management at PacBell tried to entice me to stay with the "Bell System" with promises of work at Bellcore in New Jersey and the option for a company paid master's program. The New Jersey part was a non-starter. I left for my current employer and tripled my income over the last 23 years. I now enjoy owning two homes free and clear in Idaho. I'm finally working from my home office in Idaho as well. No firearms concerns here. New Jersey and New York are "flyover country" for me. I never wish to set foot in either place.

New Jersey: An “Insult to Decent People”.

New Jersey: The other place according to Dr. House after a near-death experience by a patient left him wondering if he was in heaven.

I suspect the money from this case will go to Christie’s food pantry.

And he expects support for a presidential run?

He and Bush III are two of the worst possible candidates the Republicrat Party could puke up at this time. With eight years of a Kikuyu Prince at the helm, the ship may well have run aground and the last thing we need are two fat asses running for the oval orifice.

Why we blaming the cops when the people of New Jersey vote for this stuff? Blame the voters. I wonder if the teacher in the story votes democrat? Most teachers unions, which I’m sure he’s a part of, vote democrat.

Ya get what you vote for.

I don’t blame the cops for the law, I blame them for what they did to the guy. Like they do with so very, very, very many other things, they could have looked the other way ... especially when they waited a day to make the felony arrest.

New Jersey, number 2 of the top ten States with strictest gun laws.

#2 New Jersey
Brady Campaign score: 72

New Jersey states that it is unlawful to knowingly possess any handgun, including any antique handgun, without first having obtained a Permit to Carry, and it is unlawful to knowingly possess any rifle or shotgun without having first obtained a Firearms Purchaser Identification Card (FID).

New Jersey does not have a
constitutional amendement affirming the gun rights of its residents.

Moral of the story: Move out of that commie rat hole.

I blame the voters. They voted for tyranny, they got it. The cops did the job the voters in New Jersey want them to do.

You can blame the voters AND the cops. Cops have discretion.

The Nuremburg trials conclusively set the precedent that "I was just following orders." is not an excuse.

I don’t know, not trying to be smart but I don’t see the correlation between this story and the Nuremburg trials.

Hey RedReno: Can you imagine a Nevada sheriff saying this and keeping his job:

“One of the undersheriffs said, ‘Well, let him go, it’s 250 years old,’" Van Gilder said. "But his boss, who is the sheriff, said, ‘No, we have to arrest him.’

Man, politicians here wouldn't even wait for the recall election to tell that son of a bitch to vacate his office before the angry mob shows up. I'm not lying, they'd sandbag the capitol building while cursing the sheriff's name for putting them in mortal danger.

point being that government agents ARE individually responsible for their action even when done under the guise of law

I agree. My point is that the government agents in New Jersey are only enforcing a law that the people voted for, not laws imposed on them by dictators such as the Nazi’s.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s terrible what happened and am totally against gun confiscating liberals but the people of New Jersey could rectify that problem at the voting booth.

I suppose the question is, should these laws spread across the country, what are we prepared to do? I know what I am going to do. I will never turn in my guns.

Actually Hitler was extremely popular in the late 30's and early 40's. This picture remind you of anything? The two guys in the lower left could be NJ police except for the slight difference in insignia.

Kind of looks like this picture to me

I will never turn in my guns.

Nor will I. In the words of Winston Churchill "Never, never, never surrender."

Yes, I see the SS there, and as you say, Hitler was extremely popular. Unfortunately the people of NJ would probably vote for Hitler if he had a D next to his name.

My wife told me about this case yesterday but left out the state. I said, “Was it NJ.” She said “Yes, how did you know.”

I remember the case of the college kid from AZ with his competition marksman pistol in his car that allowed a search while visiting his mom in NJ before heading to school.

Never enter that state with a gun of any kind. If you find yourself needing one, take it off the cop. ;-)

We are no longer a free people. It’s done and over.

You can always move from NJ. I moved from Seattle for this reason.
