A state lawmaker says anyone with a license to carry a handgun in Oklahoma should be allowed to bring the weapon into the state Capitol building.
Republican Rep. John Bennett of Sallisaw has authored a bill allowing those with a permit to carry a weapon into what he calls "the people's Capitol."

I live in OKC. I mean, I’m okay with this bill.... but really, we’ve probably got more important things to worry about. Years ago my state representative was the one who got caught carrying a gun under his jacket while the house was in session. Tim Pope. But he was about half nuts you know.
Excerpted it for you. Thanks for the report.
I do it all the time in Texas. They (DPS) scan your CHL at the entrance and just say welcome. No emptying pockets, no magnetometer, no wanding like all the other visitors.
I hear ya, but I'll take everything I can get. Hopefully, one of these days OK will be a Constitutional Carry state, and also a Campus Carry state (though King David Boren will continue to fight against that as hard as he can).
Can't do it in OK - yet.
Pope was my state rep, too. His kids and mine went to Mustang Schools together but I never saw him around to help with band parents or such things. I encountered him once outside the state house chambers to speak to him about a pending bill. He was very difficult to speak to about the issue, didn’t appear interested in interaction with a voter. He was definitely a loose cannon.
I agree. If it were up to me.... I’m good with the OSBI background checks. I’m good with requiring the little safety training class. There are people that I don’t want a gun and I’m good with the state weeding them out. But the cost should be zero. I know its a source of revenue, but I’d rather reallocate the current funds we have. I don’t even mind requiring us who have the license to renew periodically. But it shouldn’t cost us, to get it, or to renew it.
Very lose cannon. I had a few interactions with him. I’m not totally comfortable talking down someone who has passed away etc... but he was about half nuts.
Welcome to the party - the Texas Capitol has a separate line just for us CHL holders!
Works for TX DPS headquarters bldgs also.
Nice post!
Can't fault him for that....
He's a Democrat though...Expect him to be one.
I got my mind around that..long ago.
I agree with that....
We agree then.......FRiend.
I agree with both of your statements, but he (through his lobbyists) was responsible for killing an important Joint Resolution we were supporting last session. It was a strengthening of the Oklahoma constitution regarding firearm rights, and he (and the rest of higher ed) pulled out all their stops to get it killed because he was afraid it would lead to campus carry. Guess what, David, it will come eventually.
