Two very astute readers have responded to my post about Scott Walkers position on amnesty by arguing that Walkers bigger problem is his apparent preference for seemingly unlimited legal immigration. Walker has said, for example:
"I dont care whether it is from Mexico or India or Germany or Ireland or anywhere else around the world, if we have people who want to come here and work hard and live the American dream, we should embrace those people."
Taken literally, Walkers statement obviously goes too far. As Neil Munro has pointed out, a Gallup poll indicates that at least 138 million low-skilled or high-skilled people in China, Latin America, India and Africa want to immigrate to the United States.
The U.S. clearly cannot welcome this many immigrants. Im hoping that, as Walker hones his position on immigration, he will make it clear that there should be limits on legal immigration.
I also hope that Walker will make clear that the U.S. shouldnt welcome everyone who has a university degree or even an advanced degree. As one reader warns, this approach would quickly commoditize U.S. graduates and professionals thus seriously threatening Americas upper-middle class.
Both readers note that Scott Walker isnt the only Republican contender who has been too quick to embrace the significant expansion of visas for foreign professionals. In fact, all of the most prominent contenders Walker, Bush, Rubio, Cruz, and Paul appear to have.
Rubio, for example, has co-sponsored legislation that would expand the number of guest-workers for the tech industry. Its premise is that the U.S. suffers from a shortage of high-tech workers, a dubious proposition. Indeed, companies like Microsoft have been laying off such employees.
The debates among Republican presidential contenders will feature a sharp clash of views on what to do about illegal immigrants. Lets hope theres also a serious clash on the issue of legal immigration.
WASHINGTON, DC U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX) today presented an amendment to the Gang of Eight immigration bill that would improve our nations legal immigration system by increasing high-skilled temporary worker visas, called H-1B visas, by 500 percent. The measure would effectively address the needs of our nations high-skilled workforce by helping meet the growing demand for workers in the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. It will also make block grants available to states to promote STEM education efforts and increase domestic STEM professionals. The committee voted against the amendment 4 to 14 with every Democrat voting against it on a party-line vote.

How is a pathway to legal status for illegals not amnesty? Because Scott Walker refuses to call it what it is?
Walker campaign spokesman Tom Evenson said they were consistent with his past comments on what to do with those living here illegally. Walker does not consider the penalty-laden pathway to legal status that he endorsed in 2013 amnesty, and hes not advocating amnesty now, he said.

I have a lot more issues with Walker than one comment.
See post 42
If his H1-B stance is the worst thing we can find on Ted Cruz, we should all get behind him this minute!
He had my vote till now.
No way can I support any pro-amnesty candidate ever. He can’t roll this back either.
Damn shame. He is otherwise pretty good as far as I know unless he has a problem with 2A. Then he really has no business running just like Jeb doesn’t.
Establishment GOP are the worst. Not as bad as a liberal but not a whole lot better either.
Exactly. There is actually fairly high unemployment for American citizen tech workers. The big tech companies; Google, Microsoft, Facebook and Silicon Valley push for more visas so they can hire foreign workers at a fraction of the cost of an American.
i majored in English lit a good many years ago. I loved to read so it was easy. That was my only reason. I went to an employment agency after college and ended up interning at a small Wall st. firm. That became my career. I learned on the job, a profession for which i had zero preparation.
Our taxpayer-funded "Government schooling" is inferior even to the schools in India. Those H1B engineers would raise the average level of production hereif they stay. Many are more versed in Western Civilization than our native students.
If they return, they'll have an enhanced command of English to succeed in their native country. I've seen it myself.
...who want the perks and the money to send home to family in their home country. ...

Congress should pass a law that prevents such transfer of money outside of the US by persons not legally in the country.
This would adversely affect many of the slimey businesses that take a % of the money being sent. ...It would also significantly reduce the incentive for many illegals to breach our borders.
I seem to recall that the 2nd greatest source of revenue of Mexico was money being sent from THEIR citizens who are in the US. .....That significantly reduces US dollars spent in the US and damages the US economy.
Don't forget that Ted Cruz has a Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy Princeton University and graduated from Harvard Law School.
Walker only has high school education. He cant get into the same elite Clubs that Cruz can.
Who cares if Walker successfully cut taxes and spending in liberal state? Its not proven accomplishments that count, its the school names that count.
But what are the true criteria regarding higher education?
The liberals said that “W” was a dummy and stupid, even though he has a degree from Yale and an MBA from Harvard.
So Bush was one of our best educated presidents, based on having attended Ivy League universities. Yet the liberals said he was a dunce.
We should fight back against this liberal nonsense about Walker not being a college graduate. Because based on their own criteria then, Ted Cruz then should be an ideal candidate. Let’s have this p*ssing contest about who went to which college, if they really want to go there.
It doesn’t say a dang word about his son attending a gay marriage.....why are you slandering the Walker Family. I read every word and it doesn’t say anything about it. Although he refused to support gay marriage and gay adoption. I know you are used to pretty speeches and nonsense like that from some candidates, but Walker is an action guy. He may not have pretty speeches on BS that you are used too, but I only care about results and he has them in spades. Very disappointed in your vicious lies about the Walker Family.
Again you said that an article screwed the military, but the article does not mention the military at all. It says that the budget will cut 85 billion in spending. I know you are not much into saving our country from high debt but again you are viciously lying about what Walker has said about the military.
Walker Crying Over Paul Ryan Speech (another Boehner??)
Your getting really nasty. It was during the nominating convention of Vice President Ryan as candidate. You can’t possibly be a conservative especially using a liberal source to bash this incredible candidate that hopefully will be President. CBS is your source for crap. Nice!
I read her post 42....it is a bunch of lies and liberal sources. I disputed all of her vicious lies. Some of the links were so nasty that they took them down and the page is no longer there.
lies??

Are you trying to be idiotic on purpose? Gov. Walker nearly graduated college, why is it Sen. Cruz’s fault that he didn’t? Now we’re supposed to denigrate a man who graduated with high honors from two of the most well-respected, toughest colleges in the world merely because your boy doesn’t have a sheepskin? This isn’t Mr. Obama we’re talking about here, Senator Cruz can show you his transcripts. Referring to Cruz’s time as a student at Harvard Law, Professor Alan Dershowitz said, “Cruz was off-the-charts brilliant.” Ever hear any of Mr. Obama’s former teachers on his time in school?
