US Coast Guard steams to Antarctica to free trawler trapped in ice

Crews from the U.S. and New Zealand were trying Thursday to rescue a damaged fishing boat with 27 people aboard that remains stuck in ice near Antarctica.

I seem to recall that the same thing happened to a bunch of Australian warmunists on a jaunt to observe the ice melting in Antartica last year. It appears that record levels of sea ice are playing havoc with shipping in that area.

yes summer i was in the south island at queenstown, NZ in 2000. just about this time of year. No jacket reguired until i went to milford sound which was a bit nippy.

And they had to fight “tooth and nail” to fund maintenance and repair of the Polar class ships. The arctic was going to be “ice free” so why spend the money?

We need those icebreakers to rescue the lefty loonies who have been trapped the last couple of seasons trying to sail the Northwest Passage. It isn't ice free? Who knew?
