This is a story with various reports flying from multiple directions and it’s hard to get a grasp on exactly what’s happening. What we know at the moment is that ISIS is claiming it has seized control of the al-Asad air base in the Ramadi area of Iraq. According to multiple twitter feeds the Iraqi army has lost contact with its people inside the base. From what we can tell the 300 Marines are on location to train Iraqi military. The Pentagon is pushing back on these initial reports about al-Asad. Just on the basis of Yemen, I would expect command-level Marine officers to be resigning their commissions and announcing their run for Congress.
I would suggest that anyone who is worried about adequate air support take a look at the many pictures of Kobane now available. You can see the effects of US based air support - where a single ISIS fighting position "attracted" 500 lbs of laser guided high explosives.
Now that our technology allows precision delivery of large bombs - at the level of hitting a vehicle or a specific part of a building - it should be possible to decimate any concentrated ISIS forces.

Of course, Obunga could order air support to be withdrawn, but that would likely cause a mutiny.

I fear he would do this, too. I think it's entirely possible that they're trying to keep this story under wraps. For all we know, it's been a full blown battle going on for days before we even got a wiff of it. That could be why he's asking for ground troops now, but as usual, too little too late. I have to wonder which side is he on.

I had no idea that our Marines had an SOP in place on how, when or why to: ‘Destroy Personal Weapons’ in accordance with the ‘rules’. (Damn, I hope to heck I read or heard or just completely screwed up my understanding of that story from last night.) Any FReeper Marines ever heard of that SOP?
