It what could be another milestone role in broadcast TV diversity, CBS has cast transgender actress Laverne Cox in its legal procedural pilot Doubt.
The Orange is the New Black actress will play a transgender Ivy League-educated attorney, described as competitive as she is compassionate. Shes fierce, funny and the fact that shes experienced injustice first hand makes her fight all the harder for her clients.
The Doubt role was always conceived as a transgender character, and its tough to imagine a better catch for the part Cox made the cover of Time magazine last year in a story about the transgender movement. While there have been plenty of transgender characters on broadcast TV shows in the past, they are often short-term parts or comedic roles.
The castings comes as shows with diverse leads are topping the Nielsen ratings. This season the most successful new drama in the adults 18-49 demo is Foxs hip-hop melodrama Empire, with ABCs legal soap How to Get Away with Murder also a hit. The highest-rated new comedy series if ABCs Black-ish. The push for diversity is impacting pilot season, too, with ABC confirming yesterday that its reboot of the 1989 film Uncle Buck will feature an all-black cast. “whos going to buy ad time on THAT SHOW???”
Fruit Loops
If the networks really want ratings, they would have a primetime show devoted to train wrecks.
I would have thought it would have changed it’s last name to something less phalic.....
All they need now is michael sam and they’ll have the whole thing.
“Laverne Cox. Really?”
It was a toss up with “Dix”; it decided to go with “Cox”.
With gays now mainstream the Left needs to make the so called next outcast group go mainstream. So its the Trans population turn.
yes, I figured that out@! LOL!
Who is their target audience? Long time Freepers have known for years that gays and lesbians hate trannies. These days maybe even that’s been forced into the closet. At least MSNBC will have competition in the ratings cellar.
Must miss TV.
Well,
I guess compared to people having genital operations and taking hormone treatments for opposite sex hormones, being homosexual is positively normal and mainstream.
What is CBS ?
Why not Di Diggler?
Heck, Michele would hit it. Him. Them. Whatever.
Well, no. Obola would hit it. Michelle? Don't know.
Why not. Just in case.
I’ve only noticed at restaurants waittrannies. My wife is always scared I’ll start laughing or say something gauche.
AAMCO TRANSmissions ??
TRANS World Airlines ?? (does TWA still even exist ??)
Like, dude!
Or is.
I think the word “laverne” must mean “no more” in some
foreign language.
Its a shame he didnt choose the name Trayvonne.....
I think TWA bit the dust...
I’m thinking this show will meet the same fate in short order
