Revisiting the Saltpeter “Myth”

Under the Radar June 18, 2010 Off Base

Over at Stars and Stripes, the Rumor Doctor looks into the generations-old belief that military recruits are secretly fed saltpeter to repress their sexual desires. Of course, reps from the Army, Navy, Marine Corps and Air Force all say it’s a “myth.” But, really, what do you expect them to say?

Viagara and Ciallis are also used to treat BPH (Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia).

Anything that involves mention of the anus or the penis has a strange reaction on a large portion of people, it turns them into tittering kids.

Sildenafil (Viagra) has been issued a few times for some parts of Afghanistan. It has improved the cardiovascular and exercise performance in high altitude settings.

Sometimes I think the whole of social media is a bunch of Beavis and Buttheads nudging each other and sniggering.

military recruits are secretly fed saltpeter to repress their sexual desires.
Having spent 10 weeks on Parris Island in 1966, I can tell you for a fact,
I didn't have a single sexual desire the entire time I was there. Not one.

I had the same experience while at MCRD San Diego in 1984.
I don’t think it had anything to do with salt peter in the chow, I think it had a lot to do with the fact that you had four screaming Drill Instructors in your face 24/7 for 13 weeks!

There was a time when the boys at the Pentagon didn’t need Viagra.

Did it never occur to you that the military members taxes are also paying for this. That medication is not handed out to active duty troops and not on demand to enhance the experience when they are not needed.

Government officials, who get to use military hospitals may also receive prescriptions like this.

So do a lot of other public dole recipients.

This is a tiny pimple in the scheme of spending. Congressional wives still get plastic surgery, so do federal employees, along with sex change operations.

For military retirees, this is a part of their earned retirement benefits which the democrats are actively trying to take away. Retirees pay taxes as well, on their retirement as well as their post-retirement income. You don’t think that a military retiree can support a family on the small percentage of their active duty pay they receive in retirement, do you? If they retire at 50% of their base pay it is just that, not 50% of their total active duty compensation. They don’t get congressional retirements, they end up with at best 1/3 of their total active compensation so most will end up working hard at a second career to make ends meet.
