A 16-year-old accused murdered was caught after taking a selfie next to the dead body, police said.
"I've never seen it before," 30-year Westmoreland County District Attorney John Peck told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "It was a key piece of evidence that led investigators to the defendant."
Authorities received the selfie Maxwell Marion Morton took next to the body of Jeannette High School classmate Ryan Mangan in the victim's home. Morton was charged Friday with first-degree murder, homicide and possession of a firearm by a minor, the newspaper reported.
He will be charged as an adult.
Mangan was shot in the face and authorities said his mother found his lifeless body in their home Wednesday.
The gruesome picture shows the victim sitting in a chair with the gunshot wound in the face, the suspect positioned his face in front of the dead body for the photo.
The name "Maxwell" was written on top of the picture, reports CBS Pittsburgh.
"Told you I cleaned up the shells" and "Ryan was not the last one" was the message sent with the picture over a text message, police said.

The pictures are supposed to disappear within seconds, but the recipient of the deranged picture saved it and sent it to police.
Authorities interviewed the suspect, who confessed to the crime Friday, the newspaper reported.
The victim was shot with a 9-mm. handgun. Police found a 9-mm. gun in Morton's home Friday, the newspaper reported. It will be tested to determine if it is the murder weapon.

Re charging him as an adult:
On the first-degree murder and homicide, this seems like a sound move.
On the possession of a firearm by a minor charge, isn’t there something a bit absurd about charging someone “as an adult” with a crime that by definition cannot be committed by an adult, but only by a minor?

You could be 18 and not a minor to be tried, but still a minor (<21) in terms of handgun possession.
