Congressional Republicans are challenging several health regulations, with one senator suggesting restaurants shouldn't have to make their employees wash their hands after bathroom visits. Such restaurants would have to prominently disclose their decision, and then would probably would go out of business, said newly elected GOP Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina. But they should have that choice, he said. Tillis raised the issue when speaking Monday to the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington. Restaurant chains such as Starbucks should be able to skip obligatory hand-washing by workers, he said, "as long as they post a sign" and take other steps to alert the public. "Let them decide" such issues, Tillis said, adding: "That's probably one where every business that did that would go out of business. But I think it's good to illustrate the point, that that's the sort of mentality we need to have to reduce the regulatory burden on this country." Tillis defended his point in an interview Tuesday in the Capitol. "Sometimes there are regulations that maybe we want to set a direction, but then let those who are regulated decide whether or not it makes sense," he said. They might pay a huge price, he said, but "they get to make that decision versus government." Tillis' comments came as some Republican presidential hopefuls say parents are justified in sometimes having their children avoid vaccinations generally required for attending school. Vaccinations were not raised at his Monday event. But Tillis said Tuesday, "Vaccinations are important to keeping our kids safe, keeping our schools safe." Tillis, former speaker of the North Carolina House, ousted Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan in November. He played a key role in reducing state taxes and regulations in the state after Republicans took control of the government.

LOL, hmm.
Not really. Why is the federal government responsible for hand-washing?
This is what happens when you hire a GOP Establishment hack to represent you.
They are idiots!
Amen, but they are!! Therein lies the problem with runaway government. See: 18 Trillion dollar debt. Most of what the Federal government does today is UNconstitutional.
Idiots like this are always the source for leading news on MSNBC
Poems and jokes from fifty years ago..
Here I set among the vapor,
some da-n fool stole all the paper.
My customers are waiting I cannot linger,
LOOK OUT butt hole, here comes my finger!
HEY WAITER, THIS FOOD TASTES LIKE S#!t!
WELL, IT IS S#1t!
That would be if your not counting illegal aliens.
Agreed. That was the wrong analogy to use on federal regulations.
I thought gloves were a requirement in restaurants, but I see some do not use them, so YES please wash your hands with or without gloves, or I don’t eat there.
One of the legitimate roles of government is to enforce contracts. If a restaurant has a sign saying its employees wash their hands after a restroom visit, then they must be held to that.
Thank GOD he didn’t say this 4 or so months ago!
Geez.... Why do the Dems even NEED ‘opposition research’ with there are idiots in the GOP that say things like THIS? lol
Even though the LOGIC behind what he said on this is well reasoned, it can be demagogue’d to no end by the Dems, the media, and will be the foil of endless late night TV and “Daily Show” jokes. People(ESPECIALLY GOP Politicians) need to know that it’s sometimes best to just keep their mouths SHUT!!
What’s even worse is after this makes its rounds through the news/media/pop culture cycle and begins to go away, he’ll keep it alive by attempting to explain himself, then it will start all over again. After that fails, he’ll then go on some form of an ‘apology tour’, and go on the Oprah show and ‘cry’, or check into “rehab”. This could follow him around from now on. Moron....
Yes....
This is just retarded.
They don’t call the GOP the Stupid Party for nothing.
Of the comment was taken entirely out of context, but why make comments that are so more easily misinterpreted than correctly understood?
Why though is he making himself look like a fool by using THIS as an example?! Give me a break.
And we wonder why the media make fun of republicans. Idiots like this make is beyond easy.
Not always, but frequently it is.
Many of us learned long ago that no good ever come of talking to a journalist. The journalist frequently arrives on the scene with an agenda and will only report statements they receive which support their agenda. If your answers to their questions don't support their agenda, they'll report your answers out of context and make your answers appear to support it.
Restaurants and fast food eateries have to comply with Board of Health standards, so hand washing should be a part of those regs. How do you enforce it? I don’t know.
I’m betting most don’t wash their hands anyway.
It’s comments like these that make even moderate people, much less the intellectual elites, regard conservatives with derision. This is just a dumb comment about an indefensible position (sorta like rape is God’s plan)and the media will jump all over it as representative of the thinking of all conservatives.
Older conservatives seem to be unable to keep their foot out of their mouths. Perhaps conservative voters should never elect anyone over 40.
(Personally, I doubt that employees who don’t care about personal cleanliness for themselves are going to be changed by a reminder sign that tells them they must wash hands, especially if they don’t understand the relationship between toilet germs and potential illnesses. But it’s worth a shot to remind them.)
