Congressional Republicans are challenging several health regulations, with one senator suggesting restaurants shouldn't have to make their employees wash their hands after bathroom visits. Such restaurants would have to prominently disclose their decision, and then would probably would go out of business, said newly elected GOP Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina. But they should have that choice, he said. Tillis raised the issue when speaking Monday to the Bipartisan Policy Center in Washington. Restaurant chains such as Starbucks should be able to skip obligatory hand-washing by workers, he said, "as long as they post a sign" and take other steps to alert the public. "Let them decide" such issues, Tillis said, adding: "That's probably one where every business that did that would go out of business. But I think it's good to illustrate the point, that that's the sort of mentality we need to have to reduce the regulatory burden on this country." Tillis defended his point in an interview Tuesday in the Capitol. "Sometimes there are regulations that maybe we want to set a direction, but then let those who are regulated decide whether or not it makes sense," he said. They might pay a huge price, he said, but "they get to make that decision versus government." Tillis' comments came as some Republican presidential hopefuls say parents are justified in sometimes having their children avoid vaccinations generally required for attending school. Vaccinations were not raised at his Monday event. But Tillis said Tuesday, "Vaccinations are important to keeping our kids safe, keeping our schools safe." Tillis, former speaker of the North Carolina House, ousted Democratic Sen. Kay Hagan in November. He played a key role in reducing state taxes and regulations in the state after Republicans took control of the government.

Forcing restaurants to post signs is enforceable.
Forcing employees to wash hands may or may not be.
I don’t think you can install cameras inside bathrooms. You may be able to move hand washing stations to the kitchen and have a procedure to make sure one washes his hands when leaving the bathroom.
Amazing times we live in. ;-)
I watched a guy working in the meat department pick his nose with his rubber gloved hand. When he asked could he help me, I told him I was just looking!
This is the cancer of our country, growing government regulation of all aspects of our lives. Our “leaders” won’t be happy until the general public behaves blindly like robots and they live in secluded enclaves of freedom. Throw the bums out and enforce our freedom granting Constitution and Bill of Rights.
>>>Ok so let me see if I have this right. Tillis is against the government forcing restaurants to require that their employees wash their hands after using the bathroom, but for the government forcing restaurants to post signs saying that their employees may or may not have washed their hands after using the bathroom?
I swear we elect idiots to Congress. <<<
And what happens if they fail to post the “Employees don’t wash hands signs” and employees are caught not washing hands? Obviously there would have to be a law against that, with some sort of penalty, so you haven’t eliminated any regulation but only replaced one reasonable regulation with a far, less effective one.
The other unintended consequence could be nearly ALL restaurants posting “employees might not have washed hands” signs to cover themselves legally. If that happens, customer will start to assume the signs are there to remove liability and that the employees actually are washing hands.
Anyone who doubts this should read the long list of ridiculous safety warnings in the owners manual of any appliance or device that uses electricity or that could with any type of absurd misuse become “dangerous”.
While I get his point philosophically, he chose just about the worst example, by attacking a regulation that is not at all burdensome and significantly contributes to public health.
Setting speed limits on th ehighways may or may not be enforceable either. Should they do away with those?
So who is flat earth now? I'm waiting for a Doctor to come out and revise
surgical procedure back to the 9th century.
Actually, they are very enforceable. We can actually monitor everyone’s speed on the highway. People just wouldn’t stand for it.
Are we going to put cameras in every bathroom?
This “hand washing” episode just doesn’t fit the Tom Tillis we know here in North Carolina.
I’d like to see an unedited video of this interview to determine whether or not Tom Tillis was led up to this gaff by a crafty interviewer and then quoted out of context.
Isn't there a coffee made from beans which pass through the digestive tract of some Asian rodent? Costs a fortune? Maybe Starbucks can find a way to profit from a lack of employee hygiene?
We could monitor everyone using the bathroom, too. I doubt people would stand for that either.
Are we going to put cameras in every bathroom?
Just on the sinks? That's one solution.
What if someone peed in the sink? Now the person hired to review the bathroom tapes is guilty of Voyeurism.
Blame this all on the anti-vaxxers like CNN is trying to do now because they think they are tea party “fundies”.
It's always someone else's fault when a politician says something stupid, huh?
“They shouldnt be forced by Federal statute. However they could by state statute. Problem solved.”
Exactly, this is the kind of thing that needs to be left to the states. Reduce federal bureaucracy, reduce “big government”.
The state with the lowest number of MMR vaccinations?
1. Colorado (85.7%);
2. Arkansas (85.9%);
3. Pennsylvania (87%);
4. Idaho (89%); and
5. North Dakota (89.9%).
You can take this to any ridiculous length you want to and it doesn't change the fact that Tillis made a dumb statement.
Llave ustedes manos.
Clean yer frickin hands....pigs...
States with the highest vaccination rates?
1. Mississippi (99.9%);
2. Maryland (98.2%);
3. South Dakota (97.9%);
4. Texas (97.5%); and
5. Wyoming (97.5%).
It’s wonderful there are no bigger problems for congress to address!!! Obama has truly transformed Amerika into a socialist paradise!
