The Lakewood Estates neighborhood is filled with families and children. On any given day, you'll see kids climbing trees and playing on swing sets.
That's why news of a residential gun range did not sit well with neighbors.
I don't know if this idiot is going to start popping off rounds, said Patrick Leary. I'm furious.
Moms and dads are extremely upset after their 21-year-old neighbor, Joseph Carannate, told them he built a homemade gun range.
I don't want to hurt myself or any neighbors. I don't want to hurt anybody. I just want to use this as my enjoyment, Carannate told News Channel 8. I don't want to have to go to a gun range, when I can just go outside my door.
Carannate wants to fire his 9mm in his St. Petersburg yard, which happens to be just feet away from children. According to St. Petersburg Police, legally he's allowed to do it.
I wouldn't have done all this if I didn't know the reaction, Carannate told us, who claims he has all the proper paperwork for his weapon.
He says he will inform neighbors when he intends to fire his gun, which he hopes to do every other weekend.
Residents tell us that's not good enough.
Leary added, You heard him say, I'll tell the neighbors when I'm getting ready to fire. What, do we gather our children and hide? Ridiculous. C'mon.

Back in the day, other men and their kids would have joined in and used it as a recreational event - so many pansies and so few men these days. Makes one feel sorry for the newest crops of kids - they don't have a chance to know what their individual genders were intended for.
As an addendum to my prior comment, if YOU were my neighbor and decided to exercise your right to turn your back yard into a gun range, I would then exercise my right to set off loud fireworks outside your bedroom window about 2:00 a.m. every morning......
Any decent conservative shouldn't have a problem with my love for fireworks in the early morning hours, right?
I hear it all the time in rural Michigan, despite being less than 10 miles from Ann Arbor. I don't have a problem with it here. This isn't the city either, and people usually have good backstops and trees.
That all said, if I was a close neighbor in St Pete, I wouldn't like this. The backstop sucks. If he shoots high, that round is going where we don't want it to go.
True - although a picture of the neighborhood would help. I was just having some fun with the story .... fortunately for us we live on six acres of heavily wooded property which is surrounded by heavily forested land that backs up to the Olympic National forest. We shoot just about everything up to and including .300winmag.
PS - One more thing - My definition of him accepting personal responsibility extends to what I would do to him if I lived next door and he shot one of my family members while he was exercising his freedom to utilize his ridiculously inadequate “shooting range”.
To quote Star Wars, I have a bad feeling about this.
100 to 1 there will soon be an ordinance against this guy shooting his gun within “X” feet of another dwelling or where people are nearby. Liberal bastards will never leave it alone.
Im pro-2a and dont have a problem with a good range
That's the problem. We need to repeal the entire National Firearms Act and all restrictions on suppressors. It would be a lot less disturbing if this guy had a silencer. It would also be nice if he built the range properly or shot indoors instead of doing something that might provoke stupid laws. I don't shoot outdoors in a neighborhood.
This is a really bad idea, his rickety little backstop in a suburban neighborhood with somebody else’s home behind it. He’s just playing straight into the hands of the antis. I have a huge hill behind my house, and I wouldn’t think of doing it here.
I don’t see a lot of judgement being exercised here. I wonder if that doesn’t have something to do with why he doesn’t go to established ranges?
If I had some kind of setup out in the country like Hickock45 on Youtube has, that would be different.

I have a gun range in my ‘yard’ and shoot almost every day.......but things are are bit different up here in the Mountains!!!
If he was one of my brothers & I heard what he was doing I tell him to stop acting like an insensitive jerk and go find the closest firing range.
If he were outside the city limits - or in his basement - it would be a different story.
My 2 cents...
Legal or not, if a single round leave his property, and it will, he can be liable. I would imagine criminal neglect at a minimum, plus a whole host of other charges, including civil, would be pressed. He is an idiot.
I have a friend with a 300 yard range, of course its on a farm.
Really interesting thread. The nanny-staters will be coming out of the woodwork.
I know! Nice to have the land in the right spot to shoot on. Can't do that where I live. Even a 22 rim fire can travel a mile.
GET YOUR LAZY BUTT TO A GUN RANGE. Geez.
If he had built one in his basement, that might have made a lot more sense... and been a lot more below the radar.
I agree. A small mound of dirt is sufficient for an airsoft or bb gun.
