St Pete man builds gun range in yard, neighbors outraged
WFLA.com ^ | 02/01/2015 | Melanie Michael

The Lakewood Estates neighborhood is filled with families and children. On any given day, you'll see kids climbing trees and playing on swing sets.

That's why news of a residential gun range did not sit well with neighbors.

“I don't know if this idiot is going to start popping off rounds,” said Patrick Leary. “I'm furious.”

Moms and dads are extremely upset after their 21-year-old neighbor, Joseph Carannate, told them he built a homemade gun range.

“I don't want to hurt myself or any neighbors. I don't want to hurt anybody. I just want to use this as my enjoyment,” Carannate told News Channel 8. “I don't want to have to go to a gun range, when I can just go outside my door.”

Carannate wants to fire his 9mm in his St. Petersburg yard, which happens to be just feet away from children. According to St. Petersburg Police, legally he's allowed to do it.

“I wouldn't have done all this if I didn't know the reaction,” Carannate told us, who claims he has all the proper paperwork for his weapon.

He says he will inform neighbors when he intends to fire his gun, which he hopes to do every other weekend.

Residents tell us that's not good enough.

Leary added, “You heard him say, I'll tell the neighbors when I'm getting ready to fire. What, do we gather our children and hide? Ridiculous. C'mon.”

Ok. I see now what he calls a range.

Here's the deal: I don't think I want him owning guns AT ALL. He's mentally retarded.

A basement range here in Florida would be filled with water.

Well, water does a really good job of stopping bullets!

In New Hampshire, the law is 300 feet from the neighboring dwelling, which works pretty well.

Quite a while back I met a guy at a gun show selling adapters for glocks. Can’t remember which part it was but its purpose was to allow water to flow through so the glock could be used underwater.

For sharks ya know.

I haven’t had a chance to watch the video, but at first glance this doesn’t look like a particularly good idea.

And it is why, as a Nation, we will never again stand up to tyrants in Government. The public at large has been sissified and feminized to the point they refuse to do anything for themselves. The reason the sheep herds are protected is because eventually the "protectors" intend to use them for food.

The Founding Fathers are saying from their graves , This bunch in America today are not our offspring. Someone must have been fishing in our pond."

I know the area...the guy is freaking moron...

Lots are WAY too small...

One accidentally discharge could mean a dead kid...

He is just too damn cheap to go to several very nice ranges in the area...

You can also shoot silhouettes in your basement.

When I read things like this I have second thoughts about moving out of this Hellhole of a State [CT]. I am lucky enough to have property that abuts State forest on one side [6000 Acres]and a 1000 acre Forestry Foundation Preserve adjoining the other side of my property. Both allow hunting [State land is Shotgun only] and the Forestry preserve you can use long rifles and Shotguns. Plus I have a excavated sandpit where I can shoot any time I want on my own property. I want to move away from this State but I don’t know if I would ever find a place where I could shoot as easy as I do now!

“I’ve often thought about building a pistol range in my basement...”

Look at buying a couple of old metal shipping containers. Burying them end- to- end under your lot would give you a nice 20+ meter pistol range as well as a hurricane/tornado shelter. A bit of sound proofing and nobody would even know you’re there.

Funny.

There is a mythbuster episode where they show that even a .50 cal won't travel far at all in water.  A few feet of water sucks all the power right out of it.

It WOULD be nice for everyone if he could legally and easily run suppressors on his firearms...

Florida recently made it legal to hunt with suppressors. One thought I had about this guy was that he wanted to fast-track applications for suppressors.

Idiots like this is why we end up with laws for everything.’

Like the county commissioners passing an ordinance prohibiting discharging a firearm within 400 yards of an occupied dwelling.

Happened in my county,

If you want a backyard gun range... go to the country and have it there, not in St.Pete!!

it appears that the article has been written to create animosity against the young man who has not done anything wrong.
