"American Sniper," the movie portraying the life of Navy SEAL and deadliest sniper in American history Chris Kyle, is on its way to being a $300 million dollar movie. The Warner Brothers film, directed by Clint Eastwood, has already shattered a number of box office records and is up for six Oscars. Over the weekend, the movie hit a new record, raking in more money on Super Bowl weekend than any other movie in history.
American Sniper is nearing the $250 million mark, picking up $31.8 million to set a new Super Bowl weekend record.
The previous high-water mark for footballs big weekend, was Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert Tour, which picked up $31.2 million when it premiered in 2008.
If it continues on this torrid clip, Clint Eastwoods biopic of Chris Kyle could challenge The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1? as the highest grossing 2014 release and will pass The Matrix Reloaded to become the second biggest R-rated release in history. Its earned $248.9 million — an unbelievable result for an adult drama about such hard-hitting topics as war and its psychological effects.
American Sniper dwarfed all challengers for the third consecutive weekend. Family film Paddington managed to carve out a niche for itself, earning $8.7 million and pushing its domestic total past the $50 million mark.
The movie is now being played internationally.
Hopefully this means DVD sales will also be high.
This movie does good for those involved but it also does good in the PR department for patriotic Americans.
OK ......
So why do have HER “rules” ?
other than the nice gun, of course?
I refuse to see any movie that has Oprah Winfrey in it
Sitting in a restaurant yesterday and heard a punk kid call it “American Assassin.” What to do with today’s youth?
I read that somewhere, I think it was Washington D.C. schools paid to take entire classrooms of children to go see it - viewing was mandatory. What would Selma numbers be like without school children?
Academy members are given dvds prior to voting. I have a friend in LA who sometimes lends us the dvds and sometimes the Screen Actors Guild mails a few out to members.
Voters sign an “oath” that they will watch them all although who really knows. The voting membership is made up of old white left wing dead men.
My liberal son made a comment last week that American Sniper was a horrible film and showed the U.S. to be the terrorists. I sat back in my chair and retorted “Well, for somebody who did not join the armed service, was never in a war zone, nor traveled to Iraq, Afghanistan or the Middle East and did not SEE the movie, your opinion is not an opinion at all but obviously just talking points from HuffingtonPost, Salon or some other left-wing rag.”
I’ve read a lot of box office reports on this weekend’s earnings, but no where am I finding a top 10 list. Where is Selma this week? I’m not seeing any mention of it either. Just curious.
I hope this sends a very clear message to the liberals in Hollywood: I would rather pay my money and watch movies like "American Sniper" again, for a second time, than any of the other typical leftist idiotic drivel you produce.
Only this time I'm taking some kleenex or napkins or something. Not just because it is cold and flu season.
They did that in Indy too, only with donated funds. Basically just gave the kids a “movie day” instead of attending regular classes
Unreal. I grew up among WWII vets, my mother’s first husband killed by a German sniper and I’m horrified by the hatred expressed by these brats.
Maybe the inability to find a current top 10 list is...purposeful.
For all the “it hit $300M” chatter, nobody has mentioned the looming disc/download sales. Considering theater prices, I’m holding my money; if it’s worth seeing twice, it’s worth buying outright rather than spending some $50 (two tickets, sitter) each time in theaters then buying it anyway. Considering the content, I expect a LARGE percentage of theater-goers will buy the disc anyway.
And few have mentioned the international market, which is rather fond of violent American movies.
I hope you reminded him that your estate will be going to the Wounded Warrior Foundation.
Some people know what they want to say, and just have to wait for the necessary instances of parts of speech to fill in their vitriolic version of Mad Libs.
Teach them. Realize that he’s been lied to for 12+ years and, if he went to college (aka American HS part Deux), even longer.
I believe it was given limited release in time for this year’s Oscars. Boyhood would be an easy out, though. Even if it doesn’t win Best Picture, it’ll win something.
I sure hope his widow and kids are benefitting from this
Who needs their stupid award when you make that kind of money?
