Union strikes at 9 US refineries in bid for new contract
CNBC .. Reuters ^ | Feb 1, 2015 | Lucy Nicholson

Union leaders called strikes on Sunday at nine U.S. refineries in a bid to pressure oil companies to agree to a new national contract covering workers at 63 plants.

The walkouts, the first held in support of a nationwide pact since 1980, target plants that together account for more than 10 percent of U.S. refining capacity. The discord comes as plunging crude prices force oil companies to slash spending.

Royal Dutch Shell, the lead industry negotiator, indicated talks had broken down.

...

Shell activated a strike contingency plan at its sprawling joint venture refinery in Deer Park, Texas, to keep operating normally.

Other companies have said they could call on trained managers to use as replacement workers, so the strikes are not expected to cause gasoline prices to spike.

The United Steelworkers union (USW) did not say at which plants the strikes would be held.

But one source familiar with union plans said walkouts were called at Exxon Mobil Corp's refinery in Beaumont, Texas, two Marathon Petroleum refineries and Lyondell Basell's plant near Houston. Also included were Marathon's refinery in Kentucky, Tesoro Corp's Benicia and Martinez plants in California, and its refinery in Anacortes, Washington,

Boy Scout motto. No need to see which station and day of the week is best. No need to stop for fuel for months. No worries about himicanes, etc. Can drive across to either coast without stopping for fuel.

I know Washington State isn’t. Our tax is per gallon, not a percentage. But Olympia is still starting to talk about a gas tax hike. Strike while the iron is hot, the bums.

“The United Steelworkers union (USW) did not say at which plants the strikes would be held.”

‘United Steelworkers Union(USW)’ is the give-away, Freepers. The International Union is headed up by Leo W. Gerard, a communist and one member of the cartel behind President Obama.

Richard Trumpka is another communist. So, when the media mentions ‘union leaders’ those two, Gerard and Dick Trumpka, should come to mind.

Doesn’t surprise me in the least that the U.S.’s western ports are setting to to strangle exports and imports. The ILWU’s union leaders are all beholden to the commie national leaders.

Gas tax is by the gallon. The less gas costs me per gallon the more gallons I can afford to buy. So the government makes more money with lower gas prices.

Why would Obama want to send gas prices climbing again?

Venezuela, Russia & Iran are hurting due to lower oil prices.

Management and sales will run refineries on strike. Maybe not at full production, maybe at higher production.
The nearby, non union refineries should have capacity to make up any shortfall.

We just filled up with regular for 95.9 cents/gal in Pocatello. Only needed 8 gallons. The F150 is full or I would have topped it off.

I spent 5 years in San Diego with gas prices from $3 to $4.50/gallon and a daily commute. I'm back home in Pocatello. Workng from my home office. My F150 has traveled under 40 miles since mid-September. My Harley Fat Bob was my principal commuting vehicle in San Diego. It has less than 50 miles since September. Over the 5 year period, I put 60,000 miles across 3 motorcycles and close to 30,000 miles on the F150. The F150 mileage was 2 trips home each year X 5 years or 18,000 miles. The balance was local miles e.g. 12,000 over 5 years...2500 miles annually for food shopping or bad weather days.

I live in Skagit also. I have relatives with jobs at Shell in Anacortes. First I heard of this strike. Bad news for local economy.

Geez, Gas Buddy isn’t showing anything there under $1.60. You’ve fallen off the bottom of their map?

Heh heh, the supermarket gives the customer points, so the more you spend on your grocery bill the sooner you get up to a dollar per gallon discount on your gasoline with those points. The premium gasoline was priced at $2.38 per gallon, but our $1.00 discount gave it to us at $1.38 per gallon.
