California has a way of living up to the worst regulatory expectations, as grocery shoppers across the country are discovering. The states latest animal-rights march is levying a punishing new food tax on the nations poor.
Egg prices are soaring in California, where the USDA says the average price for a dozen jumbo eggs is $3.16, up from $1.18 a dozen a year ago, and in some parts of the state its more than $5.

The state legislature realized this would put home-state farmers at a disadvantage, so in 2010 it compounded the problem by requiring that eggs imported from other states come from farms meeting the same cage standards, effective Jan. 1, 2015.

Theres a strong argument that this violates the Constitutions Commerce Clause, which bars states from discriminating against interstate trade. The feds regulate egg safety, and Californias cage standards discriminate against out-of-state poultry producers.

Most people do not realize how wonderful those cage-free eggs are.
The hard working hens lay eggs and all the hens get credit. No hen is exalted over another, if a hen has a bad day it is fine, Utopia on the farm.

Chicken mortality in the free range chickens is a lot higher than the caged chickens. Chickens fight and will peck each other to death. “Better” is somewhat subjective.

There are plenty of states that aren’t as fascist-dominated as California. Far more than there are that are worse. Pick one.
It just amazes me that a few economic illiterates sitting in some stuffy chamber think they can outsmart an unfettered marketplace that copes with billions of transactions each second. Hubris at the highest level.

Just did a search, and caged chickens are healthier over all than free running.
The taste difference in eggs is due to what they are fed, not the cage or lack there of.

Whut? My personal experience, 1982, was getting the h*** out of southern CA, while the gettin’ was good.
Go ahead and do it before Obamalamadingdong issues an EO repealing the 9th amend, which some say covers the right to live where ever you dam well please.
A small flock of 5 or 6 golden comets will produce more eggs than most family’s can consume.
