The NIV says it very clearly (Genesis 6:6):
"The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled."
But even the KJV is clear enough to understand:
"And it repented the Lord that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him at his heart."
And, indeed, isn't the geological record chock full of fossils of beasts which never made it into the modern world?
