RUSH: Ladies and gentlemen, indulge me for just a few minutes here. We all here at the EIB Network are experiencing a huge void in all of our hearts here today because of a death, one of our staff members, the very first staff member to join me 27 years ago in New York. Christopher Carson, "Kit," my trusted chief of staff, aide-de-camp, passed away today at 8 a.m. at his home in New Jersey after what really was a four-year battle, really valiant, never-seen-anything-like-it battle with essentially brain cancer. He thought that it was beaten back two years ago, but it came back again last fall with a vengeance.
To give you an idea, December 19th, staff Christmas party, and he was fine, normal as anybody ever remembered him. Ten days ago I flew to New York to see him in the hospital, and it was the last day that he had any kind of a short-term memory at all. It was a good visit. It was a really good day. For him, too. I've always said that I wanted to be older, and I never factored something in about getting older, and that is people you know getting sick and dying. But Kit was in all ways, every way I can of think of, a special human being and person.
We didn't have anybody, and Ed McLaughlin, who was the syndicator of the program at the time and the founding executive of the EIB Network, had just come from ABC and knew countless people at ABC. And in our building where we were at the time, ABC staffed its magazines, such as Prairie Farmer magazine and American Homeowner, Contemporary Homeowner or something. And Ed said, "Look, I got this guy that's gonna come up from the magazine, and he's gonna answer the phones and deal with the mail. He's a good guy. He's here in New York. He's trying to become an actor, and he'll help us out here in a pinch."
I said, "Oh, okay, great, what's his name?"
He said, "Some guy, Kit Carson."
I said, "Kit Carson? Kit Carson, like the cowboy?"
"Yeah, that's what he says, Kit Carson."
Okay. So the next day in walks this guy, cargo shorts, white ankle socks, black Keds, and red hair that looks like it's got yeast in it piled so high on top of his head. I was immediately jealous, I said, "What did you do, put yeast in your hair?" He didn't know what I meant. But I spotted it immediately. He wanted to be an actor, he had a performer's ego, and he thought I was crazy. After one radio show, he thought I was crazy.
_______ EXCERPT _____
What a shame. He was Rush’s chief of staff that he spoke about today in remembrance. Kit looks healthy as a horse to me!!!
Just goes to show....
Thanks for posting that and the link. It was nice to read about how important he was to Rush..it filled in a lot for those of us who heard him mentioned over the years.
May he rest in peace. I had an aunt known as “Kit Carson.” Her real name was Barbara.
That’s a touching and heartbreaking tribute. Sounds like Kit was a special man.
God bless Kit and all those who loved him.
Prayers for Kit, Family & Friends.
Dittoes to that.
Yes, “Prayers for Kit, Family & Friends.”
bttt
Gone too soon. Rush did a great job today, as always, but you could also hear he just didn’t have quite the same focus as usual. His heart was heavy.
I watched the first hour on the ditto cam and he was clearly tearing up.
So sad.
I read the transcript after listening to the show there was a lot more impact of who Chris was and what he did for Rush but more importantly there was such a great sense of trust and quality that be brought to the show. Such a great and wonderful human being, a shining example of who we all should be on a daily basis, the kind working man, the great father, the man who is ecstatic that he found a beautiful woman who married him, the man who lived a glowing example of loyalty, honesty, appreciation, kindness, and truly humble.
God Bless this wonderful man and let Jesus bring his family healing and salvation.
I listened to the opening of Rush today, and just after the intro, I KNEW from the tone of his voice, he had lost somebody very special.
The thing is, I wondered why he never mentioned him before, and then in the second hour, he revealed, he called Kit “HR,” and then I made the connection.
His tribute to his friend who loved his wife and family and was a great contributor to Rush’s team, made me reflect on the preciousness of life and what we give to others.
I listened to most of it in real time and I was dry-eyed. But now I am tearing up reading the transcript on the web-site. Hard to find a more sincere person than Rush.
Knew from the minute he started talking something was wrong - sorry to hear about the loss.....
I am a direct descendant of Kit Carson...I’d bet this guy and me are related somehow.
Rest in Peace.
My sympathies. God Bless. Much to young to go.
Wow, I’m sorry for everyone’s loss. Sounds like an amazing man.
I’m glad rush gave him such a meaningful tribute.
