First responders investigate the scene of a "brutal" home-invasion in Madison Heights early Thursday morning. The attacker's identity remains unknown.
Norma Jean Freeman, 81, died at the hospital from injuries she sustained after someone entered her home at 140 Martins Lane at about 2 a.m. Thursday and attacked her and her son, the Amherst County Sheriffs Office said.
Allen Freeman Jr., 63, remains in critical condition at Lynchburg General Hospital. After the attack, he awoke from a period of unconsciousness and called a family member, who called 911.
The attackers identity remains unknown.
Amherst County Sheriff Jimmy Ayers said in a Thursday news conference it is too early to know if anything was taken in the attack.
When you look at the victims, at the injuries, its horrendous, Ayers said. Its a horrendous crime to take place in this community or any community.
To be brutally attacked such as this, its just senseless.

Just don’t get the model with the alarm function, it only works once!
Sorry, I know we're getting off topic, but I sincerely doubt there is any Muslim connection at this time to this horrendous crime. (The perp will probably convert in prion once captured.) But to respond to the "No-Go Zone" comment.
Well yes, America, we do have "No-Go Zones"
Jamaat ul-Fuqra in the United States
I’ll tell you one thing...if they try anything in this area, they’ll meet with armed resistance. Everyone is armed around here.
Sometimes I run down the road to the Kroger or the small Walmart in Appomattox, and I almost always see at least two or three Muslims. It’s difficult to get used to that.
ahahahahaha GREAT CONCEPT!!
The guy was 63....I'm 76 and cut my own brush. They probably had the bucks to pay a local teen to tidy up if they had wanted it done. Maybe they liked (and I do) the privacy that foliage provides....
“Im betting it was those darned Amish kids again”
I think the odds are in your favor.
Yes, it seems it wasn’t an Islamic crime, now that the details are coming out. But yesterday when I read that it was an especially brutal killing, I became suspicious, considering the infestation we have here.
Red Hill is no more. Someone built a store in that location.
What are you hearing?
Dreadful. RIP.
Last time I was bombing through your way I saw a headscarf driving into the center of the old part of town. (Hey, here she can drive.) It was unsettling.
Did you actually look at the photo? Dead leaves ruining the grass provide privacy? Dead branches preventing the shrubs from growing in thickly provide privacy? A wonky street number sign half off its moorings provides privacy?
Sorry. It just looked a mess, and like no one was home or no one with the strength to put up a fight.
Good to hear.
Blunt-force trauma, according to my local news.
Yes, they enjoy all of our rights while receiving videos from the Middle East that teach them the latest in jihadist warfare.
I hope you didn't bet the farm on the "Amish kids" doing this crime. As you can see the perp is clearly not "Amish." </Sarc>
