The Megyn Kelly Moment
NY Times Magazine ^ | 1/21/2015 | Jim Rutenberg

Posted on 01/21/2015 9:06:45 PM PST by iowamark

On a gray Wednesday in November, the Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly and four producers gathered around a conference table on the 17th floor of the News Corporation building in Manhattan...

Slated for the D block was Jonathan Gilliam, a former Navy SEAL...

For those unfamiliar with the phenomenon, a Megyn moment, as I have taken to calling it, is when you, a Fox guest — maybe a regular guest or even an official contributor — are pursuing a line of argument that seems perfectly congruent with the Fox worldview, only to have Kelly seize on some part of it and call it out as nonsense, maybe even turn it back on you. You don’t always know when, how or even if the Megyn moment will happen; Kelly’s political sensibility and choice of subjects are generally in keeping with that of the network at large. But you always have to be ready for it, no matter who you are. Neither Karl Rove nor Dick Cheney have been spared their Megyn moments, nor will the growing field of 2016 presidential aspirants, who can look forward to two years of interrogation on “The Kelly File.” The Megyn moment has upended the popular notion of how a Fox News star is supposed to behave, and led to the spectacle of a Fox anchor winning praise from the very elites whose disdain Fox has always welcomed. In the process, Kelly’s program has not just given America’s top-rated news channel its biggest new hit in 13 years; it has demonstrated an appeal to the younger and (slightly) more ideologically diverse demographic Fox needs as it seeks to claim even more territory on the American journo-political landscape.

Nice that the NYT publishes this as it definitely gives credit to FOX and especially Megyn Kelly! Strange but true.

Bottom line. The leftist MSM is astonished, jealous and livid that Fox News is having the effect it has on the American people. Since its inception trust and profits have lessened considerably for what once was a profitable, influential monopoly on information for the leftist MSM.

Heh, agree and maybe they think that they can get on their good side by reporting this...ha. Could be the only accurate reporting they’ve done all year!

And yet, for a network that wants to grow in both viewers and dollars, Ailes’s favored demographic has begun to pose something of a constraint. In an online survey, the Pew Research Center has found that 84 percent of those whom it identified as “consistently conservative” already watched Fox News. Moreover, though Fox News regularly wins in the demographic that matters most to advertisers — those viewers between the ages of 25 and 54 — it has the oldest audience in cable news, a fact that its detractors are quick to point out. How many more of Ailes’s “average Americans” are there who are not already tuned into Fox News on a regular basis?

Fox makes a big mistake by trying to grow by watering down their nearly-conservative offering. If they want to grow, they should set up another network, or take over CNN.

I like Megyn,..who wouldn’t? But her Megyn moments borrow heavily from the insufferable O’Reilly where the adversarial position is more likely a function of attention than conviction. That’s why the NYT (who has no conviction) has taken notice.

Megan became famous after she was almost 40. She is fortunate to have kept both her youthful appearance and her sense of timing on how to spice up the interview. Sometimes she gets a little too spiced up. I don’t know if I would have bluntly told Former VP Cheney to his face on camera that ‘time and time again, history has proven him wrong’ about the wars on terror.

She could have jump started that old man’s heart. Or maybe she already knows him via Liz Cheney, his daughter. Maybe Megan knew he could handle that verbal glass of water thrown in his face with strength and poise, as he did.

The article is good, in that it illustrates how Megyn’s appeal is largely based on the fact that she ocasionally
becomes a voice for the left. She’s a clever lady, but before anything, Megyn is an entertainer. She is the Intellectual’s Nancy Grace, but with a prettier face. Some of this crossing over is necessary. You can only be so pure, whether left or right, but you must always be interesting or at least intriguing. When people think they know you from cover to cover, line by line, they tend to lose some degree of interest, even though they may agree with you.
This contempt of familiarity is what happened to Sean Hannity. Too scripted and predictable.

Heh, so you are a one issue fan I guess!

Well for you information, there are so many other issues out there that have much more affect on the world, but I digress.

Actually, I can understand your one issue, but can you understand the other 99 issues? Seems not, as you seem to categorize so many into one camp. While I can understand your one issue, you really need to expand your horizons into other aspects of politics. Now I really don’t expect that this will change your mind, I hope that it causes your some thought though ...hoping..

We do elect politicians for multiple jobs, most of which go unresolved. Do you really think that someone promising what you want is actually gong to do what you want? Who are you left to elect?

I don't, she is a freaking idiot with marginally suffer-able times of being right. Ask yourself if you would want her on your six when it comes time for ammo; she is questionable. In other words, she is not reliable.

Dang, I really hate to say it (because others will tag along with you) but you are really trying to push against the thread of time so to speak. The Supreme Court has spoken so nothing you say can change that. Accept it and get along with your life. You sir are an anchor of the past (much like me actually...heh). Time are changing way too fast for us older folks...
