Romney’s standing within the GOP is based on respect for him and a well-founded belief that the country would have been better off if he had won in 2008. The primary impediment to another Romney candidacy is not his wealth but doubt as to whether he can make a persuasive case for his nomination and election based on his policy and ideology. With more self-awareness and cleverness, Romney could point out that his wealth is earned and that he wants to make it possible for Americans to have greater opportunity to prosper.
