Say "P85D" to Tesla owners and fans, and you will see the drooling and twitching and heavy breathing and lustful stares--and more drooling--that Tesla's fastest, highest-performance electric car brings.
The same happens with the word "Hellcat" for fans of high-powered Hemi V-8 performance.
Now, courtesy of two owners--each convinced that their car is the fastest, baddest beast on the road--we know what happens when the two cars face off on the drag strip.
Two days ago at Palm Beach International Raceway, a Tesla Model S P85D and a 2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat competed in the traditional quarter-mile drag race.
Hint: It's no contest. At all. And the quieter car wins decisively.
...
And, now, can we please stop with the "wimpy electric golf car" stuff?

“You dont see that awd is superior to rwd in delivering power?”
? I have posted twice that AWD and low-end torque give the Tesla the edge off the line.
More so when you deny equal traction to the competitor. Two motors, awd, and you complain about slicks.
“More so when you deny equal traction to the competitor. Two motors, awd, and you complain about slicks.”
I never complained about slicks.
You covered more than that in 217.
“You covered more than that in 217.”
As I said, I never complained.
Yahbut....can it go any further than a 1/4 mile?
And they can run for years at a time..."wide open"...without blowing up.
Ha! With an extension cord the length of the track, one doesn’t need a parachute...
But an extension cord coiled behind the car would make a hilarious cartoon.
Let us know how well they do in NASCAR.
Well, I'm done nitpicking that subject.
The NHRA certified the Hellcat as being purdy quick, don't care if they played with it first.
"Purdy quick" is a very benign, generic term. Heck, most of it ain't even English, so no reason to pick at it.
Further, I wouldn't give a squirt of urine for a Hellcat, or a new Mustang, or a Tesla.
If somebody gave me any one of these, I'd sell it and use the money to build something cool.
My whole point of even being on this thread was to point out the complete, total and utter phony premise that a Hellcat is a 17.46 second car. That is so blatantly, 24 karat stupid that if I was a mod, I'd pull the thread.
“If somebody gave me any one of these, I’d sell it and use the money to build something cool.”
What would that be?
“More so when you deny equal traction to the competitor”
Dodge could have put AWD into the Challenger.
Not sure, probably a mid to late fifties pickup, EMP proof with a magneto. Always wanted to build one of those, restore might be a better word.
Currently working on a '70 Roadrunner, 528 Hemi with aluminum heads, Hilborn 8 Stack, tube front end, 4-link. It's not mine, wish it was.
Yourself?
“Yourself? “
Always wanted to do a Cobra 427 two moves in three years have put that on hold. Now I am spoiled with modern conveniences.
“EMP proof with a magneto.”
The car already comes with its own Faraday cage.
Kit Cobras are neat. Did you see the original one sell the other night on Barrett-Jackson?
Brought CRAZY $$$.
Sure. I have one that I drag race another for my daily commute. Hardly ridiculous.
“Kit Cobras are neat. Did you see the original one sell the other night on Barrett-Jackson?”
Yes. In 1964 I sat in a 289 at the Ford dealer. I think the price was $6000. Although only 17, I tried to convince my father what a great ‘investment’ it would be.
This might be a more equitable pair of runs. A 2013 Tesla S P85 (not the newest, quicker D series) vs.a 2014 Stingray Z51:

Well, I don't know about the battery part, but an electric motor makes a hell of a transmission.
But they'd have to have their own formula. Let's see, two drive motors, AWD independent rear suspension, a 200lb small displacement turbo engine putting out about 800HP...1 good sized battery.
Might work.
